Interview with Quake Studios

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Two projects I’m especially proud of are “Blackballed” by Marcus Parson and “Takers” by Spex Da Great — both challenged me creatively and showcased different sides of my production and engineering skills. On “Blackballed”, I was responsible for the mixing and mastering of a huge, dynamic record that blended live instrumentation with layered drum programming. The track featured a powerful message and a cinematic sound, combining soulful melodies with gritty textures. I focused on preserving the natural feel of the live elements while giving the drums weight and presence. It was a complex mix that required balance, depth, and emotion. With “Takers”, I handled everything from scratch — beat production, vocal recording, comping, tuning (Melodyne & Auto-Tune), full mixing, and mastering. It’s a true showcase of my all-in-one approach to crafting release-ready music. Both records reflect my commitment to quality and my ability to bring out the best in an artist’s sound and vision.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m working on a mix and vocal production package for an independent R&B artist, finalizing a full track I produced for a melodic rapper, and wrapping up a few mastering jobs for clients prepping for release. I stay active with artists across hip-hop, R&B, trap, reggaeton, Latin, Afrobeat, and even jazz and soul — helping them bring their vision to life with clean vocals, hard-hitting mixes, and radio-ready masters. Every week brings something fresh, and I love the versatility it challenges me to bring to the table.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: While I typically handle most aspects of production in-house, I’m always open to collaborating and recommending trusted professionals when a project needs something extra — whether that’s a live instrumentalist, songwriter, or a genre-specific specialist. I value quality, professionalism, and clear communication, so if I ever refer someone, you can trust they meet that standard.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I use a hybrid setup because both have their strengths. Analog adds warmth, depth, and natural saturation that gives a mix character — especially on vocals and final bounces. Digital offers precision, speed, and recall, which is key for modern workflows and detailed editing like Melodyne tuning or automation. By combining both, I get the best of both worlds: the soul of analog with the flexibility of digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to treat your music like it’s my own. I’m committed to delivering professional, release-ready quality with clear communication, attention to detail, and a deep respect for your vision. You’ll always get my best work — every time. I won’t stop until your song sounds right and feels right.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most is bringing an artist’s vision to life. There’s nothing like taking raw vocals or an idea and turning it into a finished, professional-sounding record. I enjoy the creative process, but even more, I enjoy the moment when a client hears their song back and says, “That’s exactly what I imagined — or even better.” Helping artists sound their best and feel confident in their music is what drives me every day.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: My answer: Absolutely — as long as the raw vocals are clean and recorded properly, I can enhance them with vocal comping, Melodyne, Auto-Tune, EQ, compression, and effects to give them a polished, industry-ready sound. I’ll always communicate if something needs to be re-recorded for the best results.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that I can "fix everything in the mix." While mixing and vocal tuning can enhance a song, the foundation has to be solid — clean recordings, clear takes, and strong performances. Another misconception is that mixing and mastering are the same thing — they’re two different stages with different goals. Mixing shapes the sound, while mastering finalizes it. Great results start with collaboration, communication, and quality input from both sides.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Before starting, I like to get a clear feel for the artist's vision and goals. I usually ask: What’s the overall vibe or emotion you want from this song? Do you have any reference tracks for the sound or mix you're aiming for? Are your vocals final, or do you need comping/editing? Do you want pitch correction (Auto-Tune/Melodyne), and if so, how natural or heavy? Do you need mixing only, or mix + master? Are the files labeled, clean, and ready to go? These help me deliver exactly what the client envisions — efficiently and professionally.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who understands both the technical and emotional side of music. It’s not just about making things sound clean — it’s about capturing your vision, energy, and vibe. Make sure they listen to your goals, ask the right questions, and are clear about what’s included. Communication and professionalism are just as important as talent. Lastly, always check their past work — the sound should speak for itself.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro – Fully loaded with my DAW, plugins, and sounds Apollo Twin X Interface – Reliable, clean preamps and top-notch conversion Neumann TLM 103 – A go-to mic for capturing clear, pro-quality vocals Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones – Great isolation and mix accuracy Akai MPK Key 37 – Compact but powerful enough to create full beats and melodies With that setup, I could still create heat — even in the middle of nowhere. 🎧🔥🌴

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as an artist and musician, which gave me a real understanding of what it takes to craft a great record from both sides of the mic. Over time, I naturally transitioned into production and engineering, where I learned the art of mixing, mastering, vocal tuning, and full song development hands-on in the studio. I've been producing and engineering professionally for over 15 years, working closely with independent artists to turn raw ideas into polished, release-ready songs. My career has been built on consistency, creativity, and a sharp ear for quality.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is clean, punchy, and emotion-driven. I focus on creating mixes and productions that highlight the artist’s voice while keeping everything sonically balanced and competitive. Whether it’s a hard-hitting hip-hop track or a smooth R&B record, I bring a modern, radio-ready sound that blends industry polish with raw feeling. My goal is to make every song hit hard and feel real.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Chris Brown — not just because of his vocal range and versatility, but because he blends R&B, hip-hop, and pop so effortlessly. His ability to switch from raw emotion to high-energy club records makes him the kind of artist that pushes a producer and engineer to bring their A-game. I thrive on dynamic vocal production, and someone like Chris would be the perfect match for what I do best: clean vocal layering, pitch perfection, and powerful mixes built to move people.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Focus on the vocals first. The vocal is the centerpiece of most songs — especially in hip-hop, R&B, and pop. Before overproducing the beat or adding extra layers, make sure the vocal is clean, in tune, and emotionally clear. Use Melodyne or Auto-Tune subtly if needed, and carve space in the mix for it to breathe. A powerful vocal performance in a well-balanced mix will always outshine overcomplicated production.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I primarily work on hip-hop, R&B, trap, and melodic rap, but I also enjoy working on pop, soul, and commercial urban genres. Most of my clients are independent artists looking for a modern, polished sound with industry-level quality. Whether it’s a hard-hitting rap record or a smooth vocal-driven R&B track, I tailor each mix and production to fit the emotion and energy of the artist.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is vocal production and mixing. I have a trained ear for detail and emotion, and I specialize in making vocals sit perfectly in the mix using Melodyne, Auto-Tune, EQ, compression, and creative effects. Whether it’s a raw take or a full session, I know how to bring clarity, depth, and energy to a vocal while preserving the artist’s unique tone. It’s the finishing touch that transforms a good song into a great one.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, emotion, and impact to every record. Whether I’m producing from scratch or mixing vocals, I focus on elevating the artist’s vision while keeping the sound competitive and clean. I use tools like Melodyne, Auto-Tune, and analog-inspired processing to make vocals sit perfectly in the mix. My goal is always to enhance the feeling, not just the sound — making sure every record hits hard, tells a story, and connects with listeners on a professional level.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process starts with understanding the artist’s vision and sound goals. Once I receive the files (vocals, beat, stems), I clean and organize the session, then begin with vocal comping and tuning using Melodyne and Auto-Tune. I build the mix from the vocals out — dialing in balance, clarity, and emotion with precision EQ, compression, and effects. After client feedback, I apply any revisions, then master the track for streaming. Every step is about delivering polished, professional, radio-ready results that reflect the artist’s identity.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Quake Studios is a hybrid home-based studio equipped with both industry-standard analog gear and top-tier digital tools. I use a Universal Audio interface, Neumann and Slate Digital microphones, and a treated recording environment for clean, pro-level vocal tracking. My mixing chain includes UAD plugins, Waves, FabFilter, and detailed vocal tuning using Melodyne and Auto-Tune Pro. Whether you’re sending stems or starting from scratch, I deliver a sound built for radio, streaming, and commercial release.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by greats like Dr. Dre and Metro Boomin for their sonic impact, and by legends like Bryan-Michael Cox and Darkchild for their timeless vocal production and arrangement skills. Mix engineers like Tony Maserati, Luis Diaz, and MixedByAli influence my approach to space, clarity, and punch in every mix. Their ability to merge technical precision with raw emotion pushes me to deliver that same level of excellence in every project I touch.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in music production, mixing, mastering, and vocal editing. Most clients come to me with raw vocals and a beat, or just an idea, and I help turn it into a full, polished, radio-ready track. This includes custom beat production, vocal comping, pitch correction (Melodyne/Auto-Tune), and final mastering. Whether it's starting from scratch or enhancing an existing session, I deliver high-quality results tailored to each artist’s vision.
