Kelsey Ferrell on SoundBetter

Hi! I'm Kelsey Ferrell aka Feral! I'm a songwriter for punk, indie rock, country, and pop. I am available to write for artists as well as to write and perform original songs for film/TV projects. Bring me on for my lyrics or commission a full song.

I have 20 songs released under my artist name, Feral that showcase my lyrical talent and genre flexibility. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from UC Riverside. My education in poetry and screenwriting make me the perfect songwriter for film and TV projects. If you're a filmmaker or music supervisor, I am open to commission based songwriting for your score as well as licensing of my back catalog. My music has appeared on the soundtrack of We Were Liars (Amazon Prime) and I have been writing songs for over 10 years.

In addition to commission based soundtrack contributions for films, I am happy to work with artists to contribute or create lyrics, melody and music. You can bring me on to punk, indie rock, country and pop projects.

My song, Fuck the Bourgeoisie, has 1.5 million streams on Spotify. I'm known for my satirical, quippy lyrics, excellent slant rhymes, and ability to seamlessly shift genre. I'm based in Southern California and am open to in person meetings and zoom sessions.

Working with Kelsey was awesome! This was her first time using the platform and she made it seem like it was her millionth time. She was an excellent communicator, provided me with everything I needed, and made the overall session super fun! Our community could use more folks like Kelsey.

Interview with Kelsey Ferrell

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My EP, Overreacting, which came out in August 2025. I wrote all of the songs and in a 15 minutes journey I was able to span multiple genres and go from satirical to sincere.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Yes, Gerry Hirschfeld for production on any genre! He's so easy to work with.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: You'll never get a cliche from me. My lyrics will be totally unique and fresh!

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Be specific in the kind of song you want from me—the more detail you provide me, the better I can deliver.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started writing songs in childhood, about 15 years ago. Like a lot of people, I learned guitar and started writing songs in my bedroom. Eventually, I became known in the local scene in Berkeley when I was in college. I developed some following from my punk song, Fuck the Bourgeoisie, and then enrolled in my MFA in creative writing. I also do stand up comedy, documentary film making, fiction and nonfiction prose, and teach creative writing. My music has been featured on the We Were Liars soundtrack (Amazon Prime).

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Clever, angsty, yearnful, and fresh.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Ethel Cain, because she works within a larger narrative! I'm trained in narrative writing because I did an MFA in creative writing at UC Riverside so I think it would be really fun to collaborate on a narrative project.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I'm more likely known for my punk music, but I can write country and pop just as easily.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Double entendres. I love when a line has more than one meaning.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Lyrics! My lyrics are unique; never cliche. I prioritize writing something completely fresh.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I write at home, and record at someone else's studio. If we write together, I can meet with you anywhere in Southern California. If you commission a Feral song for a soundtrack, I would record it at an external studio and license the WAV file to your production company.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Lyrics are my greatest strength. I'm known for pulling off double entendres, creating unique metaphors, finding unexpected slant rhymes, and memorable narrative. I can lean extra satirical and funny, or completely sincere and tragic. I can adapt my lyrics to any genre. I also write melodies and music on guitar, but can also be brought on to projects with pre-existing melodies or instrumentation.
