Interview with Christos Dinopoulos
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I'm particularly proud of is the album 'Blessed' by the rapper Ricta. I was involved in recording, mixing, and mastering on most of the tracks. I take pride in the fact that many of the songs achieved multi-platinum and gold status, despite being in the Greek language, which has a smaller audience. Additionally, the album reached the 8th position on the global Spotify chart for debut albums, a rare achievement in the Greek music industry.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on five rap albums, three in the mainstream category and two in the underground scene.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Unfortunately, I'm relatively new to SoundBetter, so I haven't had the chance to build connections yet. However, I'm confident I'll collaborate with some outstanding professionals in the near future.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid, for the best of both worlds. Analog provides a rich character that digital sometimes can't replicate, while digital tools offer flexibility and efficiency.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I commit to delivering on our agreed-upon terms consistently.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The freedom of creation is what I cherish the most. Every project is unique, and every day is a new challenge
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often inquire about the turnaround time for the final track. My goal is to deliver promptly, usually within three days, but specific timelines may vary depending on our agreement.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some people mistakenly believe that sound engineers can magically transform a poorly recorded track in a bad environment into a perfect piece during mixing. The reality is, while we can address many issues, the foundation of great sound lies in capturing quality performances during recording.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a reference song? Do you have a rough mix? What aspects of the song do you like, and what would you like to improve?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Pay attention to my portfolio and resume, check my social media for studio facilities and client testimonials.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Pc, Apollo x, Dynaudio Air 15, Sony C800, Sennheiser headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been immersed in the world of sound for 15 years, with the last 12 dedicated to professional work. I started my journey in prominent studios in Athens, and after gaining significant experience over five years, I established my own studio. Today, it's recognized as one of the premier studios in Athens, particularly in the rap scene.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm passionate about the modern sound, with a focus on 'big mixes,' clean, crystalline vocals, and dynamic compositions with contrasting elements that keep listeners engaged. I aim for each track to have a unique personality and character, allowing it to stand out.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'm drawn to the creativity of Kendrick Lamar, the intricate rhyme construction of J. Cole, and the electrifying energy of Travis Scott. Collaborating with any of them would be a dream come true.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Strive to connect with your work first, allowing your own emotions to resonate with it. This connection can help the listener form a stronger bond with the music, whether through lyrics, melody, or rhythm. The technical aspects can follow, but the primary goal is to create a deep emotional connection.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily, I focus on rap, drill, and trap genres. I also have extensive experience in other musical styles like Afrobeat, reggaeton, jazz, funk, and house. However, the majority of my work revolves around the world of rap.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My deep understanding of sound engineering, years of experience, and keen perception are my strongest assets
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have the ability to identify potential issues in a track and provide creative solutions. I bring a fresh aesthetic sensibility combined with professional sound engineering knowledge. I'm well-versed in today's music industry and its demands, which helps me stay current with sound trends.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My workflow begins with a deep understanding of the client's vision for the record. I immerse myself in the project, critically analyze the song, and make well-informed decisions to ensure a professional release adhering to industry standards.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: At Pineline Music Lab, we take pride in offering a top-tier facility for rap, trap, and drill music creation. Our studio boasts three fully equipped rooms, a control room, and two recording rooms with premium gear including the Avalon M5, Genelec 8040, Dynaudio Air15, and Apollo x interface.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from iconic figures like Rick Rubin for his groundbreaking production techniques, Matthew Weiss for his mastery of audio engineering, and Kendrick Lamar, who continually pushes the boundaries of creativity in music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My primary focus is mixing hip hop records, with a particular emphasis on contemporary subgenres of hip hop, such as drill and trap.
