Interview with Taru Hyvärinen
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I learned piano as a child and studied at a conservatory in Finland. However, due to social pressure, I ended up studying nutrition at university and eventually worked as a nutritionist. A few years after my graduation, I became frustrated with the feeling that my talents, time, and life were going to waste in that role. I left my job and decided to pursue my secret dream of becoming a musician. Since then, I have engaged in a variety of activities in the music field: composing my own music, recording and composing for other musicians, organizing and performing concerts, selling sheet music, and teaching piano and music theory.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as dramatic, melancholic, and unpredictable, yet also full of contrasts that bring an element of cheerfulness and playfulness. This blend allows me to explore a wide range of emotions, capturing the complexity of human experience in my compositions. The dramatic moments are often juxtaposed with lighter, more whimsical passages, creating a dynamic listening experience that keeps the audience engaged. I enjoy experimenting with unexpected shifts in melody and harmony, which adds an element of surprise and intrigue. Ultimately, my goal is to craft music that reflects the richness of life, celebrating both its joys and sorrows.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Ambiant, piano music, cinematic.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is the ability to evoke feelings with simplicity. I believe that sometimes less is more, and I focus on creating melodies and arrangements that resonate deeply without unnecessary complexity. By using straightforward musical elements, I can tap into the core emotions of my listeners, allowing them to connect with the music on a personal level. This approach not only makes the music accessible but also invites listeners to interpret it in their own unique ways. Ultimately, I aim to create an emotional landscape that speaks to the heart, encouraging reflection and connection.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotion, depth, mystery, and a sense of riddle to a song. Each composition is crafted to evoke a profound response, inviting listeners to explore their own feelings and interpretations. I aim to create layers within the music that reveal themselves over time, encouraging an immersive experience. By intertwining melodic elements with intriguing harmonies, I strive to captivate the audience's imagination and leave them pondering the story behind each note. Ultimately, my goal is to transform a simple melody into a journey that resonates on a deeper level.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process begins with finding inspiration in images that evoke a particular mood or feeling. Once I identify that emotional essence, I sit at the piano and start improvising, collecting and recording my ideas, usually focusing on piano sounds. After capturing the initial melodies, I layer in other instruments and pads to enrich the background and create a fuller sound. Once I’ve crafted the arrangement, I mix the tracks to achieve the right balance. I then let the song rest for a few days, allowing fresh perspectives to emerge. When I revisit it, I listen closely and make any necessary adjustments, refining the piece until it fully embodies the emotion I aimed to convey.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I compose piano and ambient music, as well as arrange piano compositions for my clients. My work often involves creating custom pieces tailored to specific themes or events, ensuring that each composition resonates with the intended audience. I also collaborate closely with clients to understand their vision, providing arrangements that enhance their original works or add a unique touch to their projects. Ultimately, my goal is to deliver music that evokes emotion and enhances the overall experience for listeners.
