Tommy Sheen

Guitarist/Writer/Producer

Tommy Sheen on SoundBetter

I'm a London based musician specialising in guitar, keyboards and creative composition. With over 20 years of experience in the music industry, I have had the privilege of working with a myriad of artists in some of the most revered studios (Abbey Road, RAK, Metropolis, Olympic), and toured extensively worldwide, from clubs to arenas!

Originally from Huddersfield, Yorkshire, I moved to London at age 19 as it offered the most opportunity to develop creatively by working with different artists. Starting primarily as a "hired gun" guitarist, I worked on a lot of sessions for Universal, Sony and Warner, as well as some independent labels like Communion Records. This led me into writing more and expanding my skills on synth, keys, bass and programming, which I used when working with award winning Danish artist Alex Vargas.
I am now the guitarist and keyboardist with Louis Dunford, contributing to his recent releases and performing in his live band at sold out venues across the UK. Alongside this, I have released my own material as the 'Myths' EP, and continue to write and produce for my own project and others'.
I love working with new artists in realising their creative vision, and can offer both in person and remote services from my set up at the legendary Church Studios in Crouch End. My approach is discovering new sounds with old equipment, utilising guitars, synths, modular, drum machines and a vast array of pedals...experimenting is key!

Interview with Tommy Sheen

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both, depends on the job!

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Connecting with people on an artistic level.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I work a lot with Alternative, Rock-Pop artists, but have experience in many other genres.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Being able to draw from a wide range of influences to find something interesting.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: My own voice, interpretation and colour.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Spend a good amount of time considering what the track needs sonically, and communicating openly with the artist if they have any clear ideas to start with. Then I will map out a 'sound chart' as to what/where parts need to come in, and experiment with different ideas in each section until I feel I've found the right part. Once I have the rudiments down, I'll then go back and try some more experimental things around that, until I'm happy that the picture has all the colours it needs.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: My studio is based at The Church building in North London. All of my guitars, keyboards, drum machines and Eurorack run through a 32 channel analogue Verona desk, so I can instantly call something up and start creating. I also utilise a pretty extensive collection of vintage and boutique pedals via aux, so I can experiment with a lot of different sounds quick off the draw.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Too many to count! I've always had a diverse taste and am always seeking out new inspiration. Jeff Buckley was a big influence on my early guitar playing, but i draw just as much from listening to Bach, Portishead, Zeppelin, Aphex Twin...anything that's good!

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Playing guitar and keys are my main instrumental duties, with writing/producing and MD'ing alongside.
