Interview with Grant Norton / Tate Tosto

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Jamie Sellers for production

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: That I'll approach mixing / mastering your track as if it was my own. As a producer I know how much time, energy and heart goes into making great tracks

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That mixing and mastering is a quick, low effort process. It's not, if done well

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Have your worked with a mixing / mastering engineer before? What did you like / not like about their service? Do you have two reference tracks? Do you have stems of the track you've produced?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: I'm new to SoundBetter but don't let that put you off – judge me by how your track sounds after I've mixed / mastered it

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I'm a relaxed but professional character with great attention to detail. Sound-wise I'm a lover of House

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I'm personable, a good listener and empathetic. I'll make sure I understand your brief and in the unlikely event something's not quite to your liking I'll work with you to resolve it asap

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: For mixing I use reference tracks to guide my workflow. I work with stems, analyse and mark up the arrangement first then work through song elements systematically – resolving issues and enhancing to get the most out of the mix as I go

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: DAW: Logic Pro and sometimes Ableton + pro-level plugins. Hardware: MacBook Pro, audio interface, Yamaha HS80M monitors, Komplete Kontrol S88 keyboard

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Making tracks sound better and getting positive feedback :)

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro, audio interface, NI Komplete Kontrol keyboard, Beyerdynamic headphones + monitors if poss. But reckon I might need to swap the monitors for a solar panel ha

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I got more heavily into music while studying and living in Brighton. I've been producing since I graduated from Point Blank Music School in 2014 and have been up-skilling on the DJ-front since 2022

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Eli & Fur because I love their sound and they seem like decent peeps too

  27. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  28. A: Down by Tate Tosto because it nails the vibe I aim for: melodic, uplifting and emotive. Really happy that it got some radio spins via BBC Introducing as well. My role was producer

  29. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  30. A: My next single

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: Both; precision of digital + some warmth of analogue

  33. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  34. A: Q: What's the benefit of hiring a mixing / mastering engineer when I could use a plugin / automated process? A: They apply generic processing to tracks, which can sometimes sound ok and others times really not. An engineer though can better identify what needs addressing and tailor the mixing / mastering approach to the particular project / elements that need attention – rather than applying blanket-processing. This results in a better quality mix / master. They can also respond to briefs, make additional passes / tweak if need be etc

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Less can = more

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: House, Electronic, EDM

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: Passion (as a fellow musician) and the desire to make it sound its best

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: CamelPhat, Colette, Cristoph, Duke Dumont, Eli & Fur, Ferreck Dawn, Freemasons, Gorgon City, Hannah Wants, Jon Kong / Leftwing : Kody, Kaskade, Late Night Alumni, Rufus Du Sol and many more

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Usually mixing and mastering. Sometimes added production
