Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Kid Cudi Indicud, it was the first album I did with him and I helped him transition from the Plain Pat & Emile days to produce an album on his own.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Kid Cudi
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because the plug-ins we have now analog doesn't justify the time.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Whatever you need done, will be done great.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The environment
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing a record is not also production.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you looking to get out of this record? Do you have an emotion you want to convey and how shiny do you want this to be?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a good sense of what you want out of your record and be as specific as possible
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neve 1073, CL1B, an SSL G bus compressor, a Profit 12, and a Fender P-bass
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I grew up as a musician playing piano and guitar. I was in several bands before I focused on engineering and production. In 2008, I started working at Record Plant Recording Studios. And in 2012 I became Kid Cudi's engineer, who I still work with to this day. I transitioned to Larrabee Studios and Glenwood as a staff engineer working and mixing records for top A list artists.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: As a producer, I am melodic minor with hip-hop drums. Four on the floor boring into exciting
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Atmosphere and Jack White - I love everything that he does. I think I would learn so much from him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Transitions make a record feel entertaining and low end is key.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, pop and R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being able to turn a client's idea into reality
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can turn a song to a record, bringing high quality and polished results.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When it comes to mixing I like to prep the session, organization is key. Creative ideas flow and then we finally polish it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a 28 channel vintage analog console mixed with Pro-Tools.I have vintage Neve pres and new and old compressors and EQs. Focal Trio 6BE monitors and Yamaha NS-10s. Guitars, amplifiers, drums in a 400 sq. ft. control room and a 100 sq. ft. live room. There's an outdoor lounge as well.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I've always been inspired by DangerMouse. I like his ability to produce different genres whether it be more folk based or rap or pop, plus his work on the Gorillaz album is amazing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full production from scratch or embellishing on music they already have. Writing and recording songs and mixing down to a final product.
