Interview with Rafa Chaparro
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask for references, and what is the direction the project is going to. Also I ask what kind of problems have they had with other mixes or masterings of they're tracks in the past.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: It's crucial to have communication with the person you're looking to hire, and see if they are in the same page as you, creatively speaking. Also go with your gut and work with people who give you trust.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My computer, my Apollo interface, a Shure SM7B, Cables and my guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been producing since i was 13yrs old, but i started studying professionally since 2020.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a music lover, so my style is to make music that i love. Im hardworking and i love to do quality work so my style is also to be a perfectionist.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Paramore or Tame impala, because, apart from my love for their music, the level of production they have is top tier, it's experimental, original, and the quality of their work has been consistent through out their career.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more!! Also, always listen to others. Always look for your weakest skill on production and study to get better at it, and make the best out of the feedback you get.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on rock, blues, pop and funk, but im open to work on any genere.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is music production. I do really good with recordings, editing, mixing and mastering. also another pro for me, is that I really love my job, and I give everything i have to make a project sound the best that I can.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my ears, ideas and years of studying and listening to different generes. I also bring a platform for the artist to get top the sound he or she is thinking of.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I organice my session on Pro Tools by folders, colors and I route my signals through buses by instrument, then buses for the instrumental and voice, and a mix bus. After that, I quantize what needs to be quantized and i align the phase of all of the tracks. Then I start mixing and i do a rough mix so that the client can give me feedback on the sonic aspect of the track. After that revision I finish the mixing process by getting rid of problems and improving the track. After the mix is approved i start with the mastering stage, in which i have 3 revisions, but most of the time the client only needs 2.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work mostly on Pro Tools but sometimes I use Logic Pro X for musical arrangements. I ran those DAW's through a Mac Book Pro M1. I use a UA Apollo X4 and I monitor through a pair of Adam TV7 monitors and Neumann NDH20 headphones
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Musically and sonically speaking, my biggest inspirations are the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tame Impala, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Gustavo Cerati, Charly García and Paramore. In terms of sound professionals, i admire Rick Rubin, Andrew Scheps, Chalo Gonzalez, Humberto Gatica, Sylvia Massy and Manny Marroquin
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: If I start a project on the recording stage, I try to give feedback and creative ideas to the artist if he or she wants me to, directing the recording session. If i get the tracks after, most of the times I edit, mix and master. For those stages of the production process I love to have a channel of communication with the client at all time, letting them know what stage of the project am i on, and doing revisions after every stage. I always love to give my best in every project and to communicate with the clients.
