Interview with Terrence McAuley
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Too professional might be a red flag..... We're all a little odd in this space. Catch a vibe and go with your gut.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My 2002 Tom Delonge Strat, MacBook, Interface, SM7B and my 990 pro headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Toured every continent, produced records on Epitaph, Victory etc... Diploma in Audio Engineering in 2007, 500k+ miles in an E350 with 5 other dudes, first show I played was 2001 so 24 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Little old, little new. Commit to tones like we're recording to tape but use every advantage the DAW gives us.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Besides Max Martin? Schuylar Croom of He Is Legend. He approaches songwriting so differently than I do and I know I'd grow from writing with someone like him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Occam's Razor - The simplest solution is usually the best one.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, pop, punk, metal... but I've been mastering hip-hop recently and LOVE it.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I never picked up a guitar to be good at guitar... I picked one up to be good at being in a band. I can track guitar and bass embarrassingly well.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: K.I.S.S. I have a treated room with the (2nd) best listening position I've ever experienced. Kali Audio 3-Way IN-8s, Mac Pro, SSL Interface, X32, Great Riv pres, Warm Audio pres, BeyerDynamic DT 990 Pro's, Roland V-Drums, Casio weighted key Privia, more guitars and basses than I'd like to admit and an offensive plugin collection.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin is the GOAT. Jerry Finn, RZA, The Matrix, my boys Sam G and Dean H. IFKYK
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Produce -> Arrange -> Record -> Mix -> Master. I tend to shine brightest when I'm brought a demo and work it into the final product.
