Interview with Yung Keaz
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is the album "Brute Force Birth" by my duo K1LL MACHINA, which I created with my girlfriend. I produced all the beats for the album, crafting a hard-hitting blend of industrial, electronic, and experimental hip-hop sounds. It was a project that really pushed my creative boundaries and showcased our unique style. Beyond the production, we also organized an album release show, which had a huge turnout and an incredible energy. Seeing people react to the music in a live setting, feeling the bass hit, and watching the crowd get into it was an unforgettable experience. That night proved to me that what we created resonated with people, and it motivated me to keep pushing forward with both music production and live performances. It was one of those moments where everything—production, performance, and community—came together perfectly.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m focused on growing my YouTube ‘type beat’ channel, consistently dropping high-quality beats while fine-tuning my marketing and engagement strategies. I’m also working on securing freelance music production gigs—remaking songs, producing custom beats, and providing backing tracks for singers. On top of that, I’m still DJing and performing with my partner, staying active in the NYC music scene. My goal is to balance everything—creating, performing, and finding ways to turn my skills into stable income without sacrificing my passion.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! I highly recommend Lunar Studios on SoundBetter. I used to work with them, and the producers and musicians there are top-tier. Whether you need mixing, mastering, session musicians, or full production, they bring a high level of professionalism and quality to every project. If you're looking for a team that can help take your sound to the next level, Lunar Studios is definitely a solid choice!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: At the end of the day, I use both depending on what the track calls for. If I want gritty, raw energy, I’ll run sounds through analog gear. If I need clean, detailed, and fast processing, digital is my go-to. The magic happens when you combine both—bringing analog warmth into a digital workflow to get the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver high-quality, professional, and unique music production that fits your vision while bringing my own creative touch to make it stand out. Whether it’s a custom beat, a backing track, or a full production, I’ll make sure it’s polished, industry-ready, and tailored to your needs.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The best part of what I do is bringing ideas to life—taking a rough concept, a melody, or even just a vibe and turning it into a full, polished track that hits hard and makes people feel something. I also love the creative freedom. Every project is different, and I get to experiment with different sounds, genres, and techniques while constantly leveling up my skills. Whether it’s crafting hard-hitting drums, shredding a guitar solo, or dialing in the perfect mix, the process never gets old. Another thing I really enjoy is collaborating with artists. Seeing someone get hyped over a beat I made, or hearing how my production helped elevate their song, is one of the most rewarding feelings. Music is all about energy and connection, and being part of that creative process is what keeps me going. At the end of the day, I love that I get to make music that moves people—whether it’s in the studio, on stage, or through speakers worldwide.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "How long will it take to finish my track?" -It depends on the complexity of the project. A basic beat can be done in 1-3 days, while full production, mixing, and mastering might take a week or more. If you have a deadline, let me know upfront, and I’ll do my best to work within your timeframe. "Can you make a beat in the style of [artist]?" -Yes! If you have a specific sound in mind, I can craft something in that vibe while keeping it unique to you. Send me references, and I’ll match the energy, drums, and instrumentation. -"Do you mix and master the beats?" -Yes! I make sure every beat is mixed and leveled properly. If you need full mastering or specific tweaks, let me know, and I’ll get it radio-ready. "Can you remake or change the key of a song/backing track?" - Absolutely. I can remake songs note-for-note or adjust the key for singers while keeping the original vibe intact. "Do you provide stems and trackouts?" -Yes, I can send stems, trackouts, and any format you need (.WAV, .MP3, MIDI, etc.). Just let me know how you’d like the files delivered. "Do you offer revisions?" -Yes! I want you to be happy with the final product, so I offer a set number of free revisions (usually 1-3, depending on the project). If you need major changes beyond that, we can discuss additional costs. "Do you offer exclusive rights or leases?" -Yes! You can choose between leasing a beat (non-exclusive) or purchasing exclusive rights. Just let me know what you prefer, and I’ll break down the details. "How do I credit you?" -If we’re working on a public release, a simple "Produced by [My Name]" or a tag in the credits is appreciated! If it’s a custom project, we can discuss crediting details. I always make sure clients get exactly what they need while keeping the process smooth and professional!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about music production and beat making is that it’s just pressing buttons or dragging loops—like I just sit there, click a few things, and the beat magically happens. In reality, it takes years of skill, experience, and ear training to craft a high-quality track. I’m not just layering sounds; I’m carefully designing, arranging, mixing, and fine-tuning every element so that it hits right. Whether it’s programming drums, sound selection, live instrumentation, or mixing, every choice matters in making a song stand out. Another misconception is that producers just “work for hire” and don’t bring their own artistry. But the best producers don’t just follow instructions—they elevate the track with their own creative input, sound design, and arrangement expertise. At the end of the day, good production isn’t just about making beats—it’s about making music that moves people
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Before starting a project, I like to get a solid understanding of what you need. Here are the key questions I ask to make sure we’re on the same page: -What’s the vision for this track? (Are you looking for a specific vibe, emotion, or style?) -Do you have any reference tracks? (Examples of songs, beats, or artists that match what you're going for.) -What’s the tempo and key (if applicable)? (Or do you need me to decide what works best?) -Are there specific elements you want? (For example: 808-heavy trap beats, atmospheric pads, live guitar, etc.) -Do you need this mixed and mastered, or just the production? (Specifies whether you're handling final processing or if you want me to do it.) -Are there any technical requirements? (Track length, file format, stems, BPM changes, etc.) -What’s your deadline? (So I can make sure I deliver on time.) -Do you have a budget in mind? (I can offer different options depending on your budget and project scope.) -Are you open to creative input, or do you want something exact? (Some artists like their vision followed strictly, while others appreciate a producer’s creativity.)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: -Know What You Want – Have a clear idea of your vision. Whether it’s a custom beat, a cover song in a different key, or a specific vibe, the more details you provide, the better I can bring it to life. -Provide References – If you have a particular artist, sound, or energy you’re going for, send a couple of reference tracks. This helps me lock in the style faster and more accurately. -Be Open to Collaboration – I bring years of experience in production, mixing, and live instrumentation, so I might suggest tweaks that could make the track even better. -Quality Takes Time – I work efficiently, but great production isn't rushed. If you need something fast, just let me know upfront so I can prioritize it properly. -Communication is Key – The best projects happen when we’re on the same page. Feel free to ask questions, give feedback, and let me know if you need revisions—I want you to be 100% satisfied with the final product.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I had to survive on a desert island but still make fire beats, here’s what I’d bring: 1. Custom PC Laptop (High-Performance with an AMD or Intel i9 CPU & Plenty of RAM) – Gotta have a powerful machine to run my DAW, mix, and produce without lag. Plus, I need that Windows workflow I’m used to. 2. Apollo Twin X Audio Interface – Clean preamps, top-tier conversion, and built-in UAD plugins. If I’m stuck making music alone, it better sound industry-quality. 3. Electric Guitar (Strandberg or Ibanez Prestige) – I need my shredding guitar solos, whether I’m making heavy trap beats or just vibing by the waves. 4. MIDI Controller (Akai MPK Mini or Arturia KeyStep Pro) – Small, portable, and perfect for laying down melodies, drum patterns, and synth leads. 5. Solar-Powered Battery Pack – Gotta keep everything charged—no power, no beats.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been deeply involved in music for 20 years, starting as a performer, songwriter, and beat maker before expanding into production and sound design. -Early Years – Playing & Performing: I started with guitar and songwriting, influenced by rock and metal, but eventually got into electronic music and hip-hop production, blending the two worlds together. -Sales & Industry Experience (8 Years at Guitar Center): I worked in pro audio and guitar sales at Guitar Center (4 years at the high-paced Times Square location and 4 years at the Brooklyn store). This gave me deep knowledge of studio gear, production tools, and live performance equipment, helping me connect with producers and musicians. -Live DJ & Production Work: I perform and DJ, mixing heavy electronic trap with metal-style scream vocals and live guitar solos. This hands-on experience gives me an edge in knowing what works in a live setting and how to make beats hit hard in different environments. -Freelance Music Production & Online Beat Selling: I've been growing my Type Beat YouTube channel, making custom beats, remakes, and backing tracks for artists, singers, and content creators. I'm also building my presence on Airgigs and SoundBetter to offer more freelance services. -Podcast & Event Curation: Alongside my girlfriend, I run an online podcast where we interview artists, as well as throw events in Brooklyn, keeping me connected to the underground music scene.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a high-energy fusion of trap, electronic, and rock—a mix of hard-hitting 808s, cinematic sound design, and live instrumentation that stands out in today’s music scene. -Dark & Futuristic: I love using moody synths, eerie pads, and atmospheric textures to create beats that feel cinematic and immersive. -Heavy & Hard-Hitting: My drums always hit crisp and punchy, with tight percussion and booming 808s that shake the speakers. -Rock & Metal Influence: Unlike most producers, I bring in live guitar solos, shredding riffs, and gritty textures, adding a raw, organic feel to trap and electronic beats. -Experimental & Dynamic: I use automation, creative effects, and unpredictable arrangements to keep my music engaging and constantly evolving. Overall, my sound is bold, aggressive, and full of energy, perfect for artists looking for something unique and powerful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If I could work with any artist, I’d love to collaborate with Yeat because his sound is already pushing boundaries in trap music, and I know I could add something unique to his style. His music blends dark, futuristic sound design with heavy 808s, which aligns perfectly with my production style. I could bring live guitar solos, intricate sound textures, and cinematic elements to his beats, adding another layer of energy and depth. His voice and flow allow for experimental production, so I could really get creative with arrangements, automation, and sound selection.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the easiest ways to make your beats sound more dynamic and professional is by using subtle automation on key elements. Instead of having a loop that stays the same throughout the track, small changes can add movement and energy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialize in hard-hitting, high-energy music that blends modern production with live instrumentation. My main focus is on: -Trap / Electronic Trap: Heavy 808s, dark melodies, cinematic energy, and tight drum programming. Think Yeat, Travis Scott, Ken Carson, Playboi Carti vibes but with my own unique touch. -Rock & Metal-Infused Production: I integrate shredding guitar solos, aggressive riffs, and rock elements into trap beats, perfect for artists looking for a heavier, more dynamic sound. -Industrial & Experimental Electronic: Music that pushes boundaries—gritty textures, distorted drums, and a futuristic feel. -Custom Backing Tracks / Remakes: I recreate songs in different keys and arrangements for singers, content creators, and performers.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is blending live instrumentation with hard-hitting digital production to create unique, high-energy tracks that stand out. -Live Guitar Integration: I can seamlessly incorporate shredding guitar solos, heavy riffs, or atmospheric textures into modern trap, electronic, or rock-infused beats. This gives my productions a unique edge that most producers don’t offer. -Sound Design & Beat Arrangement: I have a deep understanding of drum programming, synth layering, and FX processing to make each beat feel cinematic, powerful, and dynamic. -Remaking & Customization: I can remake songs, backing tracks, or instrumentals in different keys and arrangements, making them tailored for singers, content creators, and artists. -Mixing & Mastering for Impact: I ensure that every element in the track is clear, punchy, and industry-ready, making songs sound professional across all platforms. Ultimately, my biggest strength is my ability to bring both musicality and technical precision to every project, making beats and productions that feel alive, energetic, and ready for performance or release.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique blend of heavy-hitting production, live instrumentation, and polished sound design that makes every track stand out. My goal is to elevate the artist’s vision and give them something that feels custom, powerful, and ready for release. 1. Unique Sound & Energy I specialize in fusing trap, electronic, and rock elements to create something fresh. My beats hit hard with cinematic, dark atmospheres, booming 808s, and intricate drum patterns. If needed, I add live guitar solos, shredding riffs, or ambient textures to bring organic energy to a track. 2. High-Quality Production & Professionalism I use industry-standard plugins, synths, and mixing techniques to ensure a polished and professional sound. Every element is placed intentionally—whether it’s the drum groove, vocal effects, or transitions, everything is crafted to keep the listener engaged. 3. Attention to Detail & Customization I tailor every track to the artist’s specific style, ensuring that it matches their brand and vision. Whether it’s remaking a song in a different key, mixing vocals to sit perfectly in the beat, or crafting an instrumental that fits an artist’s voice, I pay attention to every detail. 4. Versatility & Musicality Being a multi-instrumentalist and producer, I can adapt to different styles and add elements that most beatmakers can’t. Need a rock-infused trap beat? A cinematic drill instrumental? A dark, moody electronic vibe? I can make it happen while keeping it unique to the artist. At the end of the day, I bring experience, creativity, and a commitment to making every track sound massive and impactful—whether it's a beat, full production, or a mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project is different, but my workflow is structured to deliver high-quality results efficiently while keeping the creative process smooth. 1. Understanding the Vision I start by discussing the client’s needs—whether it’s a custom beat, a guitar session, mixing/mastering, or a backing track remake. I ask for references, mood descriptions, BPM, key, and any specific requests to make sure the track fits their vision. 2. Sound Selection & Composition If I’m producing a beat, I begin by choosing the right drums, synths, and melodies that match the artist’s vibe. If I’m recording guitar, I decide on the tone, effects, and playing style that will complement the track. If it’s a cover song/backing track remake, I carefully recreate the instrumental in the requested key and arrangement. 3. Production & Arrangement I build out the track, making sure the energy flows well. Add transitions, fills, and ear candy to keep it engaging. Layer live instrumentation (if needed), like guitar solos or atmospheric textures. 4. Mixing & Mastering I make sure everything hits hard and sounds clean by fine-tuning levels, EQ, compression, and spatial effects. Add stereo width, punch, and warmth to the track. Master the final version so it’s loud, clear, and professional across all platforms. 5. Revisions & Delivery I send a first version for feedback and tweak it based on the client’s input. Final delivery includes all requested stems, high-quality WAVs, and project files if needed. I ensure the client is 100% satisfied with the final product before wrapping up. My workflow keeps things efficient while leaving room for creativity, making sure every track is industry-ready and uniquely tailored to the client’s needs.
