Interview with Kleidi B
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: There are 3 specials, the first and most recent one is the song “Days Like these” from the band “Trovaire” where I was a topliner, a very special song with very demanding clients who managed to get a very special song. The second one is the single “Nadie los podrá salvar” in the video game “Arco”. I'm a big fan of videogames and the fact of having worked on such a good indie game makes me really happy. Lastly the work with artist Gabriel Abedi “Ekewo” where I was lead singer. It was very challenging because of the tonality and the fact of recording it in the “ewe” language (spoken in Togo and Ghana), very exciting.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on various small projects as a session singer recording from my home studio.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It will always depend on the project.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always give 110% in every project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that every project is different and I love to be surprised by how far each song can go. I also enjoy the fact that it is a challenging job where you are always improving.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They ask me if in addition to singing I also write lyrics and melody, I tell them yes :)
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: To think that it is easy transmit a feeling through your voice.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have any inspirational artists that you would like your music to sound similar to?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say listen carefully to the singer you are going to hire, be sure that this is the voice you want for your project and don't be afraid to ask about any type of project you have in mind.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My cuatro (instrument of my country), lots of books, food, water and a boat to get out of there.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been singing since I was 8 years old and joined the children's choir in my city. From there I have sung in different choirs, until entering college in 2019, where I studied Music specifically Vocal Jazz. Being guided by professors graduated from Berklee College of Music. Currently I have been working for 3 years as a session musician recording from my own home studio for people around the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Different.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Jacob Collier just to work on extensive vocal harmonization, it would be a challenge and a great experience.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: “Just because it's not usual to do it doesn't mean it's wrong".
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually my clients come to me for jazz, r&b, soul and latin music (mostly latin house).
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say vocal harmonies, both complex and simple, I love being able to add strength and beauty to songs through them.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I add a special and different timbre to your song with my voice, whether you are looking for a jazz singer to add swing to your song or a latin singer to add swing of another style! I also love to play a lot with vocal harmonies and addlibs, I know how to focus on the style you want to express and adapt very well to it, interpreting with great emotionality and creating lyrics that touch the audience that listens to them.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually clients send me the instrumental track, send me the lyrics and the melody (if they already have it created), and depending on the amount of work I give the estimated delivery time, I work with unlimited changes (until the client is 100% satisfied with the result). I deliver the work in WAV format, with all the stems, with and without voice effects. If the work is as a topliner, after receiving the instrumental track, I ask you to send me some artist as a guide and if you have a theme you want the song to be about and the language you prefer (Spanish or English). Then I record at least 2 ideas and send them to the client, we work step by step to confirm that the client is satisfied with what is being done and so on until the song is complete.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a Focusrite Scarlett 3rd generation interface, 1 RODE NT15th generation condenser microphone, 1 SHURE SM58 dynamic microphone, I work with a macbook air M1 and as DAW I use REAPER.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My biggest musical idols are Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. From the new school, Jacob Collier and Willow Smith (being a great inspiration not only as singers but also as instrumentalists and music producers).
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The area in which I specialize and have gotten more jobs so far is as a lead singer, creating vocal harmonies and as a topliner, having more than 200 projects done in this field.
