Interview with Bruce Brown Muzik

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I’m preparing to work on a project with a producer friend of mine and I am also preparing to work on my debut album.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital. It’s what I’ve learned to use

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: To give you the best song possible that fits who you are.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love the creative side of songwriting for others

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That it’s not work just because I may get it done quickly. I’ve been recording music for about 22 years seriously and have accumulated a lot of experience and knowledge from doing this for so long.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What type of song are you seeking? Does it fit the image or brand you’re trying to put out? What subject do you want to talk about in your song?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: I’m not run of the mill. I have a lot of different types of styles of songs. So I would be prepared for me the provider to ask some questions pertaining to the song you’re looking for.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My mic, my phone and charger, popper stopper, and the cord to connect my mic to my phone

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: My career path has been in food and beverage for about 20 years now.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My style is pretty versatile when it comes to songwriting. It’s like that because life is so different once you realize there’s more to it than what you thought it was on your own. It makes how you approach a song so different than thinking it has to sound like all mainstream rap out there.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would love to work with Timbaland. I would love to bring some of his old style out of him so I could at least get a few songs that I know would mesh well with what he would make for me.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Well I can’t sure a music production tip but I can share a music recording tip. Don’t rap close to the mic like you’re going to kiss it. In fact be 4 to 6 inches from the mic so you won’t peak on your vocals.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Hip hop and gospel

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill is coming up with words that can bring a persons moment or subject to life.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring an authenticity and real point of view that is hard to come by in the rap world of songwriting today.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: I think about my theme. Then I search for a beat that fits the theme of the song I want to write…I record it and I send it to you.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I use a pretty mobile setup that’s worked for me over the years to record. I have an Irig studio mic with a popper stopper that connects to my phone which I use the Spire app to record my vocals on which mixes the music you make once it’s finished. And I also use a mastering program as well to clean up anything else far as sound that needs tightening up. I know what you’re thinking…recording from a phone? Mixing and mastering programs? I don’t always use them as I do like and have people who mix and master songs I feel need that touch but overall the process I normally use makes my turnaround on songs come out quicker.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Missy Elliot and Timbaland, Eminem, Notorious BIG, Nas, T.I. Royce da 5’9 among a list of many other rap artists

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Songwriting and recording a demo of the written lyrics.
