Sean on SoundBetter

My work has been featured on BBC Radio 1 + Essential Mix, Boiler Room, Mixmag, supported by Mall Grab, Prospa, Kettama, and played at festivals like Glastonbury, Parklife, Dekmantel and many more. I specialise primarily in techno and electro and all kinds of underground electronic music.

Hey! My name's Sean - a 23 year old electronic music producer, DJ & mixing engineer with 5+ years of experience in the field on a professional level. I have mixed down countless tracks including my own productions, which have gone on to be played on huge platforms such as BBC Radio 1 + Essential Mix, Boiler Room, Mixmag and even in TV + film and many internationally respected music festivals.

My primary service is focused on mixing down a multitude of electronic music sub-genres like techno, electro, breaks, garage, house and many more. I began making music around the age of 14, but started following it as a serious career path from 17/18 onwards. Over the past 5-or-so years, my self-taught knowledge of mix engineering has been rapidly improving, to a point where I've mixed down tracks for a number of peers in the underground dance music scene.

If you are someone that creates electronic dance music and are looking for a clean, polished mixdown with a signature sound that will help you stand out from the saturated crowd of producers, then you're in the right place!

Interview with Sean

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: As a mixing engineer - some people can confuse you with being a collaborator / remixer. I won't be adding or removing any parts of your song, I will only be making what you've sent me sound even better sonically.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Whilst analog holds a certain level of character and an element of 'human touch', we now live in a world where the techniques used in analog gear can easily be replicated in the digital domain. At the end of the day, what matters is whether the track sounds good or not.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love seeing a client over the moon with how the final mix sounds! Definitely the most rewarding part of the job.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: . How's your day going?! . How many tracks are you looking to be mixed-down? . What vibe are you going for with the track(s)? . Do you have any reference tracks that you'd like yours to sound similar to?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Try and get your track sounding as good as you possibly can before sending it off to be mixed. An engineers job is to make your already finished track sound even better. Make sure you're 100% happy with your version of the track before sending it off.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I began making music at around age 14, but started taking it seriously at 18 after releasing my first tracks and went on to college to study music technology.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I would describe my style as peak-time club music that gets people moving on the dance floor.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to work with Disclosure one day! They've always been a massive inspiration to me and have always gone above and beyond with their productions and mixdowns.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Just keep on creating! Don't worry about releasing on record labels and getting heard by the biggest artists - in today's day and age, anybody can get heard by the right ears - the key is to show you're not afraid to put yourself out there :)

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I primarily work on electro, breakbeat and techno music - but have also worked on garage, house, EDM and even ambient music.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: My strongest skill is having a good ear for a sonically balanced and tonal mix.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I will provide the client with a consistent, balanced mix, with all of the instruments shining through beautifully and cohesive in the final pre-master.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Typically I will import the clients track stems into my DAW and begin using processing and effects such as compression, distortion, filtering, transient shaping, EQ and automation.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio setup consists of a MacBook Pro running Logic Pro, x2 KRK Rokit 5's, a range of professional studio monitoring headphones and acoustic treatment.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Mixdowns, track + mix feedback and remixes.
