Interview with Donar Wing
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of “Is Anybody Out There.” I was the recording artist and lead vocalist, and the song represents the emotional honesty and sense of connection I want to bring to my work.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently creating my album The Balance Within, a cinematic and emotional pop project exploring the balance between darkness and hope.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet. I prefer to recommend someone only after I have worked with them directly and can speak honestly about the experience.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because it gives me flexible editing, reliable recall and an efficient workflow for remote collaboration. The technology supports the process, while the emotion and performance remain human.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will listen carefully to your vision, communicate honestly and treat your song with preparation, respect and attention to detail. I will deliver the files and revisions we agree on within the confirmed schedule.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the moment when lyrics and melody become a believable human story and the listener can feel something beyond the notes.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: A common question is whether I can follow a reference singer’s style. I use references to understand the desired emotion, phrasing and energy while keeping the performance natural to my own voice.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That recording vocals is simply singing the correct notes once. A convincing performance also requires interpretation, phrasing, dynamics, preparation and careful attention to the lyrics.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What should the listener feel? Is the melody final? Which vocal parts and layers are required? Are there reference tracks? What files, credits, usage rights and delivery date are needed?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose a vocalist whose tone and emotional approach fit the song. Provide a clear instrumental, lyrics, melody guide and reference tracks, and discuss the required files, credits, revisions and deadline before work begins.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My MacBook Pro with Logic Pro, RØDE NT1 microphone, PreSonus Studio 68c interface, Slate VSX headphones and Nektar Impact LX49+ keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I returned to music in 2019 through choir singing and private vocal lessons. Since then, I have developed my work as Donar Wing, released several original songs and continued building my skills as a vocalist, songwriter and independent producer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Warm, reflective and emotionally direct, with a cinematic sense of development. I enjoy performances that begin intimately and gradually grow in intensity.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Michael Bublé. I admire his phrasing, vocal control and ability to make a polished production still feel personal and connected.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Capture the emotion before chasing technical perfection. A sincere vocal performance can be refined, but perfect editing cannot create a feeling that was never recorded.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on cinematic pop, emotional pop, soft pop and singer-songwriter material, from intimate verses to larger dramatic sections.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is communicating the emotion and meaning of a song through an expressive vocal performance.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an expressive male voice, emotional storytelling and close attention to the meaning behind the lyrics. My goal is to make the performance feel sincere and connected.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin by listening closely to the instrumental, vocal guide and reference tracks. After discussing the intended emotion and style, I record the lead vocals and any agreed harmonies or layers. I then edit and tune the vocals where needed before delivering the agreed files.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record in Logic Pro on a MacBook Pro using a RØDE NT1 or Shure SM7B with a Triton FetHead, through a PreSonus Studio 68c interface. I monitor with Slate VSX headphones and also use a Nektar Impact LX49+ keyboard.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and Michael Bublé inspire me through their distinctive voices, emotional delivery and ability to connect with an audience.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record expressive male lead vocals for pop, soft pop and cinematic songs using a supplied instrumental, lyrics and vocal melody. Vocal editing, tuning, harmonies and additional layers can be included when agreed before the project begins.
