Interview with Alan Ponce

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My favourite projects where with the bands I played on. Qayin Coronatvs by Wolves' Winter and Summa Negativa by Psicósfera

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I've been producing some post-punk at the moment and I'm working in some metal live sessions

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't know anyone...yet

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For convenience I prefer digital as I don't have much room where I live to be playing with analog equipment.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That they're going to be 100% satisfied with the results that I give them

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That I can play music for hours and I can help people express themselves with their creations giving them that low-end that is so necessary

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The most common question is if I can bring a certain audio or groove to the song, and my answer is that I always bring the exact audio my customers want

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I'm a machine, thankfully that hasn't happened much but I've been in positions where I had to pretty much hurry a recording because someone thought that what I was doing was easy and quick.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: If they have any written parts, chord charts, tabs, scores and pretty much everything that allows me to be as quick and efficient as possible, what kind of instrument do they want me to record, what techniques would they like me to do and what kind of audio they're looking for

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: To give as much context as much musical context as possible. It's very hard to record bass without a melody to follow and/or percussion tracks.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My 3 basses, an audio interface and a laptop computer.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started playing music at 14 years old and I've been playing in bands non-stop ever since. I had my first band at 16 and at 22 I decided that I wanted to make it a central part of my life and at 26 I got my bachelor's degree in music at the CAEMSA institute in Buenos Aires.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Groovy, the first thing that the bass of any song needs in any kind of music is groove, I'm very meticulous of the kind of groove that the style of music requires and I try to exploit it to it's maximum.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There are several artists I'd like to work with but lately I've been listening to bands like She Past Away and Rendez-Vous and I'm loving it, I'd love to record some 80s inspired post-punk/goth music because I never had the chance to play that kind of music. Another artist would be Knower just for the reason that the music is very fun to listen and play.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Patience. It takes time to create something great and enjoyable, there's always going to be moments where you are stuck and you have to be open minded to always try new stuff and rest when your body needs it, nothing good comes with an exhausted mind just to hurry a process.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: In my local area I'm a pretty well known metal bassist and I've collaborated with several bands and I've been integral part of a lot of them. When I started studying to get my degree in music, my music collaborations started to be more diverse like jazz, bossa-nova, tango, rock, pop, reggae and more

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: -Creativity: I create basslines in my head almost instantly when hearing a song and I'm very quick to bring them out when I'm recording. -Versatility: I'm very open-minded about music styles and genres, so I can easily play every kind of music and make it enjoyable -Technique: I've been playing bass for 15 years and I played uncountable styles with a huge amount of techniques with high precision and groove like: slap, tapping, picking, fingerstyle, double-thumb and more.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring exactly what the song needs in order to sound professional and pleasant to the listener, I try to use all my skill and knowledge of music that I accumulated over several years to uplift the music to the next level

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First of all, I thoroughly listen to the track I'm going to record several times, I write down the chords, changes and possible basslines to be recorded, after that I import everything to Ableton and start laying down the basslines I wrote and experiment with what's going to be better for the song, trying several techniques and grooves until I'm satisfied with the result. Then after all is done, I'll show it to the client and if they're happy with the results the song is delivered

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have three basses: -A custom made GM 6 string active bass with active Peavy Cirrus pickups, Sadowsky electronics and Mayones Viking body. -An Ibanez GSR306 fretless 6 string active bass made in India. -Yamaha BBG5A 5 string active bass

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm mostly inspired by a metric ton of musicians, some of these include Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Thundercat, Alex Webster, John Myung, Pedro Aznar, Marcus Miller, Tetsuo Sakurai, Esperanza Spalding and many more

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I record professional bass tracks for all the music that you want, in any style and any genre
