My name is Rafael Rivera also known as “Rafy El Hijo. Prodigo”, i’m a CHH artist. I’ve worked with JeanMark Rodriguez for various years know and he has recorded, mixed and mastered my latest music and it’s been nothing but quality coming from the speakers. I have songs in various genres and sub-genres like Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall, reggaetón, trap and drill in which JeanMark has proven to render an excellent sound from his studio (JNR Studio). Examples of these are “Arbol Caído”, “Dale Repost” (in which Mark played the guitar also), “Tranqui en Peace”, “Mami Eres Mi Héroe” and more.

Interview with Jeanmark Rodríguez

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is my work on the EP “INTERNATIONAL” by Richard Lorenzo Jr. I served as the exclusive mixing and mastering engineer for this 7-song EP, which has since surpassed 1 million streams across major platforms like Spotify. What makes this project stand out for me is the opportunity to collaborate with an artist who has such a unique musical style. Capturing and enhancing his distinct sound required meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of his vision. It was both a challenge and a rewarding experience to craft a polished, professional sound that resonated with his audience. This success led to an ongoing partnership, where I mixed and mastered a second EP for Richard Lorenzo Jr., solidifying a creative synergy that continues to drive achievements in the music industry. It’s projects like this that remind me why I’m passionate about what I do.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I’m mixing a 14-song reggaeton album for a client. We’re in the final stretch, working on the last three songs before moving on to the mastering stage. It’s been an exciting project, and I’m focused on delivering a cohesive, polished sound that aligns with the client’s vision.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I’d recommend Josue Yanez (ZENAY) for beat production and additional creative input. He has a strong understanding of modern production styles and delivers high-quality, professional results tailored to an artist’s needs. If a client is looking for unique, industry-ready beats or production enhancements, Josue is someone I trust to elevate their music.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both! I believe in combining the best of analog and digital to achieve the highest-quality results. Analog gear brings warmth, depth, and a certain character that adds life to a track, while digital tools offer precision, flexibility, and efficiency. By blending the two, I can capture the timeless quality of analog with the modern versatility of digital. It’s about using the right tools for the song and ensuring the final product resonates with both the artist and the listener.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver professional, industry-standard sound that stays true to their artistic vision. I’m committed to providing clear communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative process to ensure your music reaches its full potential. Every song I work on is treated with the same passion and care as if it were my own. With my expertise in mixing and mastering, I promise to help your music stand out and connect with your audience on every platform.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most about my job is bringing an artist’s vision to life and being a part of the creative process. There’s nothing more rewarding than taking a song from raw tracks to a polished, professional piece that connects with listeners. I enjoy the balance of technical precision and creative freedom, crafting every detail to make the music shine. Hearing the excitement in a client’s voice when they receive the final mix or master is truly fulfilling—it reminds me why I do what I do. Plus, every project is unique, keeping my work fresh and inspiring.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Here are some of the most common questions customers ask me and my answers: 1. How long does it take to mix and master a song? It typically takes 2-5 days, depending on the complexity of the track and the number of revisions needed. I prioritize quality, so I make sure every detail is perfect before delivery. 2. Can you make my song sound like [reference track]? Yes, I can use your reference track to match the vibe, tone, and balance you’re looking for while keeping your song unique. It’s about enhancing your vision, not copying someone else’s work. 3. Do you offer revisions? Absolutely! I include two free revisions with every project to ensure you’re happy with the final result. Additional revisions can be made for a small fee. 4. What do you need from me to get started? I need your audio files properly labeled and exported at the highest quality (WAV format is best), along with any reference tracks and specific notes about the sound you want. 5. Do you work with specific genres? I specialize in Trap, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, Rock, Worship, and Gospel, but I’m versatile and open to working with other genres as well. 6. Can you fix issues in the recording? Yes, I can address some recording issues like noise reduction or vocal tuning, but I recommend providing the cleanest possible recordings for the best results. These questions help build trust with clients while setting clear expectations for the project.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that mixing and mastering are just about making a song louder or applying presets. In reality, it’s a highly creative and technical process that requires attention to detail, critical listening, and a deep understanding of music. Mixing involves balancing each element of a song—vocals, instruments, and effects—to create a cohesive and engaging sound, while mastering ensures it translates perfectly across all playback systems and meets industry standards. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach; every song is unique and requires a custom touch to bring out its full potential.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When working with prospective clients, I ask key questions to fully understand their vision and ensure I deliver exactly what they need. These include: 1. What is your vision for the song? I want to understand the emotion, vibe, and story you want to convey. 2. Do you have any reference tracks? This helps me identify the sound and style you’re aiming for. 3. What’s the intended use for the song? Knowing if the track is for streaming, radio, live performance, or other platforms allows me to tailor the mix and master accordingly. 4. Are there specific elements you want highlighted or adjusted? This ensures I prioritize the details most important to you. 5. What’s your deadline? Understanding your timeline helps me manage expectations and deliver on time. 6. Do you have any prior notes from mixing or recording sessions? Insights into earlier production stages can help me understand the track better. 7. How many revisions do you anticipate needing? This allows us to collaborate efficiently and make the process smooth for both of us. These questions help me deliver a personalized and professional service that aligns with each artist’s unique goals.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were on a desert island, my 5 essential pieces of gear would be: 1. MacBook Pro with Pro Tools Ultimate – My primary DAW for mixing and mastering. 2. Lynx Aurora Converter – For pristine audio quality in all recordings and playback. 3. Dangerous Music D-Box – Perfect for monitoring and summing. 4. PMC Result 6 Monitors – For accurate and reliable monitoring. 5. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Headphones – A trusted tool for detailed sound work when monitors aren’t an option. These tools would keep my workflow efficient and professional anywhere!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My career path began in 2014, fueled by a deep passion for music and sound. Over the years, I’ve specialized in mixing, mastering, and music production, collaborating with artists from genres like Trap, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, Rock, Worship, and Gospel. I’ve worked with record labels such as Remnant Music Records and contributed to various projects for Dream Label Group (a subsidiary of Capitol Records), including work for their artist “Coqui.” With over 5 million streams across my productions and more than a decade of experience, I’m committed to helping artists achieve their vision with professional, industry-standard sound.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is clean, dynamic, and emotionally driven. I focus on enhancing the natural character of a song while ensuring every element has its place, creating a polished and professional sound that resonates with listeners. Whether it’s the warmth of analog gear or the precision of digital tools, I blend both worlds to bring out the best in every track. My ultimate goal is to deliver a sound that connects emotionally while maintaining clarity and impact across all playback systems.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Tauren Wells because of his ability to blend powerful vocals with modern production styles across genres like pop, worship, and R&B. His music carries deep emotional and spiritual messages, and collaborating with an artist who combines technical excellence with heartfelt creativity would be an exciting opportunity to push boundaries and create something truly impactful.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: A great music production tip is to focus on the arrangement and dynamics of your song. Make sure each section of your track serves a purpose and keeps the listener engaged. For example, build anticipation with subtle changes in instrumentation or dynamics as you move from a verse to a chorus. Don’t overcrowd your production—sometimes, less is more. Give the vocals or main melody space to shine, and let other elements support rather than compete. A well-thought-out arrangement can elevate your song and make the mixing and mastering stages much more effective.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on a variety of genres, including Trap, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, Rock, Worship (CCM), and Gospel. My focus is on delivering professional mixes and masters that enhance the unique style of each genre while staying true to the artist’s vision. Whether it’s the high energy of urban music or the emotional depth of worship songs, I ensure each track resonates with its audience.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My typical work process is designed to ensure a smooth, collaborative experience and a polished final product: 1. Initial Consultation: I start by discussing the client’s vision, goals, and specific needs for the project. This includes understanding their artistic intent, reference tracks, and any creative input they want to incorporate. 2. File Preparation: Clients send me the necessary files, ensuring everything is properly labeled, organized, and exported at the highest quality. 3. Mixing Stage: I begin by balancing all elements, focusing on clarity, dynamics, and cohesion. I carefully sculpt the sound using a combination of analog gear and premium plugins, enhancing the unique character of each track. 4. Client Feedback: Once the initial mix is ready, I send it to the client for review. They can provide detailed feedback, and I include up to two free revisions to fine-tune the mix. 5. Mastering Stage: After the mix is approved, I proceed with mastering to achieve a professional, polished sound that translates well across all playback systems and streaming platforms. 6. Final Delivery: The final mix and master are delivered in the required formats, whether for streaming, CD, or other media. I also ensure all metadata and technical specs are optimized. Throughout the process, communication is key—I keep clients updated and involved to ensure the final product exceeds their expectations.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio setup is designed for high-quality mixing and mastering with precision and clarity. I work on a Mac Studio with Pro Tools Ultimate as my primary DAW, paired with an Avid C24 controller for seamless workflow. My setup includes carefully chosen analog gear for warmth and character, including Heritage Audio, AudioScape, SSL, SPL, Lynx Aurora, Dangerous Music, and more. Alongside this, I utilize premium plugins like Waves, FabFilter, and Plugin Alliance for detailed sound sculpting. For monitoring, I rely on PMC Result 6 monitors paired with a Genelec 7350A subwoofer and a treated acoustic environment to ensure accuracy. Every detail in my setup is tailored to deliver industry-standard results for my clients.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Professionals like Chris Lord-Alge inspire me for his legendary mixing techniques and attention to detail, Dave Pensado for his innovative approach to sound and dedication to teaching, and Serban Ghenea for his ability to consistently deliver chart-topping mixes. Their work motivates me to push boundaries and create music that resonates deeply with listeners.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is mixing and mastering their music to achieve a polished, professional, and industry-standard sound. I specialize in a variety of genres, including Trap, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, Rock, Worship, and Gospel. My goal is to enhance each track’s unique qualities, ensuring it aligns with the artist’s vision while standing out across streaming platforms.

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: My strongest skill is crafting a clean, balanced, and professional mix that enhances the emotion and energy of a song while ensuring it translates perfectly across all playback systems. My ability to pay attention to the finest details—whether it’s EQ, dynamics, or spatial placement—while maintaining the overall vision of the artist sets my work apart. This, combined with my experience in mixing and mastering across diverse genres, allows me to consistently deliver industry-standard results.

  41. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  42. A: I bring a professional, polished sound to every song, ensuring it meets industry standards while staying true to the artist’s vision. My expertise lies in balancing clarity, warmth, and dynamics, making each element of the track shine. I use a combination of high-quality analog gear and premium plugins to enhance depth and character, while also tailoring the mix and master to connect with the intended audience. Most importantly, I bring passion and attention to detail, treating every song as a unique piece of art and collaborating with the artist to bring their vision to life.

  43. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  44. A: When looking to hire a provider like me, my advice is to: 1. Review Their Work: Listen to their portfolio or playlist to ensure their mixing and mastering style aligns with your vision. A good engineer should have versatility while maintaining quality. 2. Communicate Your Vision: Be clear about what you want for your song—provide reference tracks and specific details about the sound you’re aiming for. A provider can best deliver results when they fully understand your goals. 3. Ask About the Process: Make sure they have a clear and professional workflow, from file preparation to delivery, so you know what to expect at each stage. 4. Check for Professionalism: Look for someone who values quality, meets deadlines, and maintains clear, consistent communication. 5. Collaborate: Choose someone who sees your music as a partnership and is willing to work with you to bring your vision to life, not just someone completing a transaction. Hiring the right provider ensures your music will not only sound professional but also resonate with your unique style and audience.
