Timothy Wagner on SoundBetter

200+ Million Streams on all projects, that I have produced, mixed and mastered. Bachelor of Arts in Music Production and 8+ years experience in the industry

I’ve been producing music for the past 12 years.I started studying Music Production in Berlin in 2016 and have been working as a full time music producer and engineer since 2019.
Starting out in the Rock and Metal Scene as a guitarist and singer, I transitioned into Beat Making and Hip Hop production with the 2 man project „jaynbeats“. The songs released under this artist name have all been produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by me.
Since 2020 I have my own label and distribution deal with Chapter One, a subdivision of Universal Music.
I specialize in Sample Making, as well as mixing and mastering and use high end gear and plug ins to record and edit.
I work on many different music genres, the most popular releases are mostly out of the German and French Hip Hop and Trap Scene.
All mixes and masters will be worked on in my own professional music studio in Berlin.

Interview with Timothy Wagner

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: What are you unhappy about in the current state of the song, what would you like improved and which elements do you like most about it right now? Who do you want to reach with your music (commercial or artistic value emphasized)

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Ask if they can deliver a sample of one of your songs (30 seconds of a song) to see if they likes your approach

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Laptop, Mic (Neumann or Austrian Audio), pre amp, Interface + cables, Headphones (akg 712 pro)

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: Professionally for 5 years ongoing, 3 years of studying before that 5 years of producing as a hobby before that

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Genre bending, modern where it should be and nostalgic where it can be

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Kendrick Lamar because he’s the GOAT

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Listen to a mix very quietly so you can hear if each element has its own space in the mix or if certain elements overshadow others

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Mostly Trap and Hip Hop music. I have developed a knack for EDM, especially techno in the last two years. I come from Rock and Metal productions and still take these on from time to time.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Finishing and polishing a song. Bringing out the last 20 percent.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Multiple years of experience, open mindedness genrewise, flexibility and my own take on a unique sound

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: For mixing: Listening to the demo/reference, getting a feel for what the song attempts to be. Cleaning up, getting rid of elements and parts of the tracks that clutter the sound or keep it from the desired result. Adding creative mixing elements that I believe improve the song, such as beat cuts, creative vocal editing, build up and filtering of the instrumental. Lastly making sure the end result is what the artist desires and if not revision looping until it is.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I have a 35 sqm studio optimized for vocal recording, mixing and mastering, with an analog chain, multiple instruments (piano, guitars, Bass, percussion) and a 15 sqm B-Studio to allow working on different parts of a project at the same time

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Rick Rubin, Mustard, Scott Storch, Kanye West (only his music)

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I usually produce music directly with the artist in my professional studio in Berlin. I have also mixed and mastered for a variety of other artists across many genres.
