Renée Gros on SoundBetter

Versatile vocalist & topliner with a knack for crafting captivating melodies, specializing in soul-pop vibes. Original song "Shy Guy" was placed in Netflix's 'Survival of the Thickest', starring Michelle Buteau. Experienced in pop, soul/r&b, funk, and EDM vocal styles. I also love stacking harmonies! Let's collaborate and bring your music to life!

I am a singer-songwriter born, raised, and based in New Orleans, LA. Players including Jon Cleary (Bonnie Raitt), Nigel Hall (Lettuce), and Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk) helped bring my debut EP, Temporary Love, to life in the studio. I love working on music that has a soulful vibe to it, no matter the genre. I offer melody writing, lyric writing, lead vocals, and bgvs/harmonies. Let's join forces and create incredible music together!

Lots of amazingly talented singers here, and It definitely doesn't get easier with that many options. Thanks to Renée, our search was immediately over once we found her. She's responsive, fast, detail oriented and delivers quality work. I feel like we'll keep coming back to her in the future too.

Interview with Renée Gros

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That background vocals don't need to be arranged. There are a myriad of ways BGVs can go, and even if you only have a slight idea in mind, communicating that is very helpful.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Have some references in mind for the sound want and have all your lyrics typed out!

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: my vintage Wurlitzer electric piano, my AKG c 414b, some bongos, my laptop, and my apollo twin interface! I hope cables are included lol

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have been a New Orleans based artist for the past 3 and half years, and have grown a lot since my start. Prior to that I was working as a singer on board cruise ships for two years.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Energetic, soulful, and full of personality. I like to bring a little bit of personality to everything I record. I think delivering a true performance is what makes a recording special.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would love to work with Dan Auerbach. I am a big fan of his production work, particularly with Yola, Marcus King, and Aaron Frasier

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on songs that have a soulful sound, one way or another. I have worked with artists who make everything from 70s r&b/funk to jam-band-rock. I particularly love to help singer/songwriters bring their visions to life, as I am a singer-songwriter myself.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My voice. I have a 3.5 octave range and have experience singing many different vocal styles and genres, so I can usually deliver whatever sound my clients are asking for.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: As a singer, I think my biggest strengths are my taste and musicality. I always want to make sure that what I'm singing is cohesive with the language/vibe that's already been laid down. I pride myself in being able to dig into many different styles/genres of singing. As a top-liner, I'm always aiming to bring personality and a clear perspective. I like to tell stories through my songs, even when I'm keeping things super simple. I love to make music that invokes feelings in its listeners.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I begin by listening to the track I'm working on and arranging the parts I'm going to be singing, if that's a part of the job. I like to have all the lyrics/changes mapped out before I begin recording. Then I get together with my engineer and start tracking. I usually finish up a tracking within an hour or two. Than I make sure I have all the files properly organized to send back my client's way! I usually give a light description of what I was going for, and am happy to go back and make some adjustments, making sure my clients are happy with the final product I give them!

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I have a home studio and someone engineers for me. I typically use my Akg c414b condenser mic with an isolation shield and pop filter.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Modern people that inspire me include Emily King, Bahamas, Brittany Howard, Lake Street Dive, Theo Katzman, Allen Stone, Madison Cunningham... to name a few. All time favs include Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Norah Jones, Fleetwood Mac, Amy Winehouse...again... to name a few.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I most commonly work as a singer for hire, providing lead and/or background vocals for artists/musicians seeking them. With background vocals especially, I often do the arrangements myself. My goal when tracking is always to record what is going to serve the song best, whether that's a lush harmony stack or a single harmony line.
