Bodhi was a joy to work with! He was very patient and professional throughout the process and made my song come to life. He took what I had in my head and made it a reality! I am definitely going to work with him again.

As a musician that has primarily worked in real-time recording sessions with live instruments, I felt a little overwhelmed with the idea of building in the studio. Bodhi was super patient with me and walked me through tracking, offering creative and informed palette choices that supported the songs with what they needed. He has a great ear and is really open to the collaborative process. He's been really supportive of my exploration and growth as a recording artist. He loves what he does and it shows in his level of care for each track.

Bodhi is a multitalented engineer, producer and instrumentalist. I worked with Bodhi over the course of a few months and we made one of my favorite songs together. He is patient, kind and extremely helpful in developing a sound that is unique to the artist. He always brings new ideas to the table and is eager to explore the artists own ideas. I am so grateful for him and all his hard work, I couldn't recommend him more highly!

I've worked with Bodhi on a ton of tracks over the past few years and it has been the best collaboration I have ever done. And we are still colllabing. He has sent me beats, I've done features on his tracks, he's remixed mine and he has mixed a few songs for me as well. Most impressive are the mixes he's sent me to master (I am a mastering engineer as well as an artist). They are very very well done. As a mastering engineer, mixes that sound this clean are what you really hope to receive. They make my work a breeze! I definitely have high praise for Bodhi as a mix engineer and producer :)

Interview with Bodhi Landa

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A batch Doll Muscle singles, one song for Romantic Thriller, another Crystal Box LP, some silly beats.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Rebecca Huston! She masters all my work

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital: more flexibility and generative possibilities.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You will learn something about yourself.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love making beautiful things. Sculpting and decorating temporalities.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: People sometimes think there's a secret level of sonic excellence that their ears can't hear. If it sounds good to you, it sounds good. Period.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What are you trying to achieve? Can you provide reference material? Do you have a release strategy in place?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: No feedback is irrelevant.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: iPhone, Octatrack, Prophet 6, OP-1, Moog Sub 37

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have been involved in music since I was very young, but I have been producing seriously for just the last few years. I've been the lead producer on a few indie projects and I have my own solo project as well.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Minimal, Vivid, Cinematic

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to work with Mount Kimbie or someone like that, with a huge base of knowledge about music and a wide open conception of genre and style.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Pay attention to space (linear and dimensional).

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Usually I work on music loosely within the pop genre, but always with some kind of weird or occult slant. I love working with artists with a strong vision, but not a lot of traditional musical training.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Creating sonic environments where artists feel free to play and experiment

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Musically, my approach can be experimental, but it is always rooted in the centrality of the artist and their ability to express their unique truth. Nothing else matters.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: The process really depends on what kind of a piece I am aiming to create, but usually I start with a very simple beat to write chords to. I challenge myself to make the most interesting beat I can with as few elements as possible. Then come chords on a synth or piano. By this time, some essential piece of the song's character will begin to reveal itself. I build around the song's central thematic (be it a word, melodic line, phrase, whatever) as I discover it. I work around this idea with synth swells, arpeggios and samples and try to anchor it with a bass line. Once fleshed out, I begin the process of eliminating all extraneous elements so that the songs main idea can be clearly understood.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I work out of a home studio with Ableton Live as its centerpiece. I have a variety of hardware drum machines and synths, but most of the sequencing and programming happens in Ableton with the use of Push 2 as a studio controller.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: In no particular order, some some visionaries that I find inspiring are: Rick Rubin, James Blake, Devonté Hynes, Shygirl, Nico Muhly, AG Cook, Fred Again.., John Carroll Kirby, Moses Sumney, DJ/Rupture, Dre Skull, Arca, Justin Vernon, Tyler, the Creator, Solange, Mura Masa, Charli XCX, Sega Bodega, and Bjork

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I work in a few different capacities. A lot of times, I supply an artist with a beat or instrumental that becomes a song. I will give them the opportunity to 'shop' my instrumentals, then help them finish the song once they've made their contribution. Sometimes I simply sell the instrumental as a pack of stems and never see the song again, depending on how the artist wants to work. I also love to start with an artists demo and produce around that, making a full track. Additionally, I have a coaching practice where I help artists who don't have a lot of technical musical experience develop their artistic voice in electronic music performance. This takes a number of different forms including, gear selections, learning various creative platforms and finding a sustainable workflow.
