Rob Nagelhout on SoundBetter

I have been an active musician for 15 years and my favorite thing to do is work with bands and artists to get their music sounding great. I have been producing records on my own for 10 years now and have had the opportunity to work with and learn from renowned engineers like Andrew Scheps, Mike Sapone, and Jesse Cannon along the way.

my start in music was playing bass. I have played in numerous rock bands, jazz orchestra, hip hop groups, Pop groups, etc. I ended up going to USC for Popular Music Performance where I got my bachelors in bass performance. There I became exposed to and fell in love with recording music. I began to learn all about engineering and production and then started recording my peers in school. Since starting I have now engineered and produced a number of albums, EPs, Singles, etc. and worked with esteemed engineers such as Andrew Scheps (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adele), Mike Sapone (Brand New, Taking Back Sunday), and Jesse Cannon (The Cure, The Misfits).

I currently have an in the box recording and mixing home set up (I have most of the top VST plugins, instruments, etc.) where I do most of my mixing, mastering, and editing, etc. for more extensive live tracking I have access to multiple studios in the surrounding LA area. I can do mixing, mastering, editing, producing, instrument tracking, arrangement, sound design etc.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

I've been working with Rob for several years now and he's my primary go to when I want to track or even just work on a few ideas. I'm enamoured with his broad music knowledge, ranging over all genres, and to be able to bring that into a studio or rehearsal room on TOP of being a technical guru, I can't ask for anything else.

Rob is the real deal. He has a great ear which is something you can't buy. He's recorded my vocals numerous times and they always turn out great, better than top engineers I've worked with. When you find a producer with both natural creative talent AND the ability to make top quality sound recordings, keep him around

Interview with Rob Nagelhout

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: It really depends on what the artist needs from me. If I am producing a song from the beginning my process will start with the song and making sure it is arranged in the best way to convey the message of the tune. From there I will work with the band/artist to get the best performances out of them on the recordings possible. Once the song is done and the arrangement is tracked at its best, I will begin to dial in the mix and make sure that the dynamics are right from section to section, followed at the end by a mastering chain that ensures the song is at an appropriate level and sounds consistent along different listening platforms.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: My setup is certainly inspired by the analog world however much of what I do is in the box. I have most of the big plugin bundles and have great outboard preamps and A/D conversion, and I set up my sessions to emulate a large format console.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I am very inspired by the likes of Rick Rubin, Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), The Neptunes, Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag), Andrew Scheps, etc.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: The most common work I do is production, I enjoy working with the artists on the songs and helping them work towards achieving their sonic goals for whatever project they are working on.
