Gregory Khozov on SoundBetter

Mixing engineer, producer & composer recognized by David Lynch. Four-time semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and Unsigned Only Music Awards. Passionate about depth, clarity & emotion in music. In my workflow, I blend analog equipment and iconic instruments with state-of-the-art digital processing.

Whether you need mixing, producing, or composing, I’m ready to step in at any point in the process. I’m glad to discuss the idea, the song, or it’s sound to develop the creative foundation.

As a mixing engineer, I work across all styles and genres. I tend to make dynamic mixes, focusing on energy, depth, and emotional impact, while ensuring clarity.

My studio features a full-range monitoring system, ensuring every layer and nuance of your song is refined. I use industry-leading plugins from Universal Audio, Soundtoys, Waves, Sonnox, among others. For tracks that benefit from analog warmth, I use hardware gear and an analog console, to add depth, color and texture.

As a composer and sound producer, I focus on creating atmospheres that connect deeply with listeners. With a background as a classically trained pianist, I can bring musicality to projects, including piano performances when needed.

I work with a wide range of hardware synthesizers & samplers, including legends like the Emulator II, ARP 2600 and many more from different musical eras. Blending these with modern instruments & tools allows shaping a sonic character that fits each song’s unique direction.

- Turnaround time: 1-2 weeks (production), 3-5 days (mixing).
- Stems & Instrumental mixes are provided for free.
- Unlimited revisions: I work on a project until you are satisfied.

I had the pleasure of collaborating with Gregory on the acoustic renditions of two of my songs. The combination of instruments was unconventional for both electronic and academic music—it featured a concert grand piano, vocals, and a French horn! Gregory approached this project with great thoughtfulness and attention to detail. As a producer, I, along with the listeners, was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the result! Thank you very much Gregory! 🤝

Interview with Gregory Khozov

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: My main monitoring system is built around Genelec 8351B 3-way monitors and dual 7360 subwoofers in stereo configuration, tuned precisely within an acoustically treated environment. My hardware - synths and outboard gear - can either feed directly into an Apogee Rosetta converter for recording and playback in the DAW or pass through a Soundcraft mixing console if a touch of extra character is needed. On the production side, I maintain a diverse array of synthesizers and samplers - vintage and modern units like the ARP 2600, ARP Odyssey, Moog Prodigy, Moog Voyager, a pair of E-mu Emulator IIs, Emax II, Kurzweil K2500S, Waldorf Microwave XT, Nord Lead 3, Korg 01/W and DW-8000, and a crazy WASP replica. On the guitar front, I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio and Ibanez Jem 777, paired with a Line 6 Pod Pro XT or Zoom 9010. For sampling, occasional vocals, or re-amping through a Line 6 Spider IV combo, I use a Shure SM7B, SM57, or Rode Classic II tube microphone.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: As a mixer, I work across all genres to highlight a project’s unique vibe. If the pulse of the song calls for a punchy, solid bottom end, I’ll make it happen. If it’s an acoustic ballad, I’ll listen closely to its whisper, bringing more depth and emotion while making the sound focused and detailed. As a sound producer, I tend to blend electronic layers with acoustic instruments - say, piano or rich strings - but being open-minded, I keep it flexible. I always bring ideas to the table, and yet my focus is on crafting a sound that’s true to the artist’s intent and the song itself.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: It’s both! I love working with hardware synths and analog gear because of that rich, solid sound they deliver - it’s got a real personality and a certain unpredictability that adds life to a track. But when it comes to mixing, digital tools are so advanced now, they can do wonders, particularly if you’ve got well-recorded analog sources in high resolution. On the production side, modern sample libraries offer realistic articulations and multi-layering for acoustic instruments that you’d never pull off with hardware alone. But then again, nothing sounds like a real E-mu Emulator II. You can sample anything into it - and the results are so special. So, it’s really about finding that sweet spot between hardware and software to draw out each song’s true essence.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Mixing, producing, and composing, along with all types of editing - including vocal tuning. As a trained pianist, I can also provide piano performances. With a collection of hardware synthesizers, including iconic models from ARP, Moog, E-mu, Waldorf and more, I can deliver rich, character-filled synth parts that add depth and personality to any track.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: I'm fortunate to know Yoad Nevo, a true master of sound with a remarkable background. I also highly recommend Andres Mayo.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: For mixing, I’d suggest sending over a rough mix of your song - it really helps to get a *feel* for where you’re starting.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I’m dedicated to getting it right for every client - delivering work that leaves them genuinely satisfied.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm inspired by artists such as David Bowie, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Recoil, Peter Gabriel, PJ Harvey, Björk, Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) and many others. On the production side, I admire the work of Flood, Brian Eno, Mark 'Spike' Stent, Tom Elmhirst, and Tony Hoffer.
