Interview with Tom Nicholson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a few grad projects at my university whilst on my degree, one being a foley man for animation, I did a soundtrack for a short film called "Solar" and it was sick to work on, I think it's getting a release, not sure when. but it was super cool to be a part of.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A few things, I got my label, I do A&R for a few labels, and I got an events group as well, but it's chill

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: They are both good, analogue can be a pain in the arse sometimes, but it's cool, Digital is just easier, to be honest, it is nice when you have an analogue compressor patched in, but it is an expensive hobby.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Your order will be finished in a maximum of 2 weeks if your order takes longer to complete, depending on the project and size of the project, we will give you a 15% discount.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I just love it, I love working with my colleagues in my events group, it's so fun, and I love hearing new music and actually making new music as well and masting things as well.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Them Saying "Can you do this?" and me going "Yeah"

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That I'm just a DJ.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What their needs are and what their ideas and references are.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: I'm not going to bite if you ask me for another revision haha.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Macbook, Speakers, The Glue, a Table and a Chair.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started when I was so young, I got given a notebook at school and I'd just download random software and FL was one of them, I think I was like 13 when I started back in 2015, but I've been doing it ever since, got 2 degrees in it as well.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Coffee and a Cigarette in the morning type beat.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: There are a few actually, Kevin Parker because his sound is sick, and Chris Lake init because he's a g.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Compress ya mids init

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work on House Music, a bit of Dubstep and generally weird things.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Actively listening, making key notes about what needs to be done in order to make elements of the tunes sound better.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I got a lot of techniques that I've learned and refined over the last 10 years, I can make your tunes timeless with a little bit of that sparkle and warmth, the mastered sound you've been looking for.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I spend up to 5-7 hours typically producing every other day.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: It's just me, a pc, some bits and bobs and a few speakers!

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I got a few I love Burials music, "it's like emotions being thrown at you". - Timbahontoast. When discovering EDM, I got well into Tchami and ever since then I got into a little bit of tech house, a bit of riddim and various amounts of random compositions by very sick underground producers, so yeah I get a lot of my ideas from the shuffle button.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I produce and master things mostly, but, I also DJ and am always down to do a gig.
