Interview with DUVII ARTISTA

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Years ago, I was approached by someone who wanted to compose a song. I wasn't as popular in music as I am today. I wrote the lyrics and composed its melody, only to find out years later that this song (All I Ask) was sold to ADELE. I never earned credits, but I was happy to know that somehow, I was a part of her growth and success.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am producing my new tracks in French, Hebrew and Arabic, and I am currently working on eight projects composed of songwriting for artists through ASCAP and SOCAN.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Gekko, Robert L Smith and DUVII (myself). Humour is essential to gain trust.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Whether analog or digital is "better" in music production depends entirely on the context and the project's specific goals. Both analog and digital have their strengths, and the choice between them is a matter of preference, style, and practical considerations. Ultimately, there's no universal "better" choice, however personally, I would select Digital, as it is versatile and cost-effective. It is precise with efficiency for collaboration and portability.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: A common misconception about songwriters is that my role primarily concerns writing lyrics. However, the reality is that I am a multifaceted creator who contributes much more to the composition of a song. Beyond crafting lyrics, I am responsible for shaping the song's melody, which sets its emotional tone. I also play a vital role in determining the song's arrangement, deciding where verses, choruses, bridges, and instrumental sections fit, significantly impacting the song's overall flow and dynamics. Sometimes, I select and arrange the musical instruments that complement the song, from guitars and keyboards to drums and orchestral elements. I create harmonies that add depth and complexity to the music, enhancing its overall sound and impact. I provide input during the production process, helping to guide how the song should be recorded and produced to achieve the desired sonic qualities. The work of a songwriter is deeply rooted in emotional expression, drawing from personal experiences and emotions to craft songs that resonate with listeners. Collaboration is another integral aspect of songwriting, as I frequently work with other musicians, producers, and artists to bring their creative vision to life. I constantly adapt my style to suit different genres, artists, or projects, showcasing my versatility as a skilled creator. Nonetheless, this process involves a multifaceted and creative process beyond merely writing lyrics, encompassing melody, musical arrangement, emotional expression, and collaboration to craft a complete and compelling musical experience.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: The first question should always come from the client first (reverse psychology), but a warm welcome should be essential. Professionally, after they've revealed enough and are feeling welcomed, it is time to get to business. When talking with prospective clients, it is essential to ask thoughtful questions to understand their needs and expectations, such as Their Project Overview and artistic vision and objectives. What's your project's expected timeline? What artistic style or genre are you inclined towards? Are there specific artists or works that inspire you? Do you have particular colour schemes, themes, or visual references in mind? What message or emotions are you aiming to convey through the artwork? Are there notable project milestones or deadlines to meet? Are there significant events or dates linked to the project's completion? How many rounds of revisions do you anticipate? What's your preferred method for providing feedback? Do you have specific stipulations regarding the rights and ownership of the artwork? Would you happen to know if there are any licensing or copyright matters to address? What is your preferred communication method during the project? Are you open to regular progress updates or meetings? Can you share samples of your previous work or projects? Is there a particular piece from your portfolio you'd like to emphasize? How do you think you could evaluate the project's success? What are your ultimate expectations concerning the project's impact and reception? Is there an interest in establishing a long-term artistic partnership beyond this project? Finally, and at the very end, would be the multi-million dollar question. Could you outline your budget for this project? Are there resource constraints or limitations to consider? Do you have any existing materials or assets to be incorporated? These lay the groundwork for meaningful discussions with clients, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of their requirements and fostering a successful creative collaboration. Customizing the questions to suit the specific project's context and characteristics would be best.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I don't have personal preferences or desires. However, If I would have to choose, it would've been David Bowie (RIP) Working with someone like David Bowie would have been a fascinating opportunity. His ability to merge music, fashion, and storytelling would have created a truly unique and transformative creative experience.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Embrace Imperfections! Don't be afraid to leave subtle imperfections in your music. Sometimes, the quirks, like a slightly off-beat drum hit or a hint of background noise, can add character and authenticity to your production, making it stand out uniquely.

  32. A: All genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: As a songwriter who speaks several languages, I excel in seamlessly integrating linguistic diversity into music. This skill empowers me to create songs with cross-cultural appeal, crafting richer, more poetic lyrics and offering unique perspectives. I can collaborate effectively with artists from diverse linguistic backgrounds, adapt to different languages as needed, and connect with a global audience through their music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: As a songwriter, I architect a song's identity, crafting its lyrics, melody, and emotional impact. Words that tell a story convey emotions and connect with listeners. The musical tune and rhythm make the lyrics memorable while flowing with the concept and theme, which is the central idea or message that gives the song depth and purpose. I will always infuse feelings and experiences into the song, making it relatable, and butter it with originality and unique perspectives that set it apart. Organizing theme verses, choruses, bridges, and more, shaping the song's flow, is paramount.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Songwriting always starts with inspiration and a concept. Lyrics are crafted to convey a message, and a melody is created to match. The song's structure, chord progressions, and harmonies are planned. I would then complete the masterpiece by arranging and editing it for my client, with demos to review. Feedback and collaboration are sought before recording the final version. I want to point out that copyright and licensing considerations are addressed.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Since I am also a novel author and love writing, please allow me to invite you into my setup. Initially bare and unassuming, my room is an immersive sanctuary for musical creation. The journey commences with a careful consideration of space. It's not just square footage but an acoustical canvas waiting to be painted with harmonious vibrations. The room whispers its potential, hinting at the symphonies it cradles. Acoustic treatment is the alchemy of sound. Panels adorned with sound-absorbing fabric adorn the walls like tapestries woven from echoes. Diffusers adorn the ceiling, resembling intricate art installations, ready to disperse sound waves into a dance of resonance. In the corners, bass traps stand sentinel; their geometric forms promise to sculpt low frequencies into defined, palpable pulses. Then comes the treasure trove of equipment, each piece radiating its unique aura of sonic allure. Microphones resemble sacred relics and stand ready to capture the musical soul's intimate whispers and thunderous roars. Headphones, like gateways to otherworldly realms, beckons the listener to dive into the depths of sound. Audio interfaces bridge the analog and digital domains with their intricate web of connections with an air of mystique—their diaphragms pulse with anticipation. Towering studio monitors silently vowed to reveal the purest sonic truths. A powerful computer, poised as the maestro of this orchestration, holds the court at the center. Within its digital realm, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live are sorcerers, ready to transmute electronic signals into heart-pounding rhythms and soul-stirring melodies. In the corner, a humble mixer sits, unassuming yet commanding. Its faders and knobs, like the conductor's baton, are poised to shape audio signals into sonic landscapes, ensuring that every note is sculpted to perfection. Musical instruments, each a vessel of expression, find their designated spaces. Guitars with weathered fretboards, keyboards with ivory smiles, and drums that seemed to pulse with a heartbeat stand as sentinels of creativity. Cables, like the intricate neural pathways of inspiration, crisscrossed the room. The artistic energy conduits ensure that every nuance is faithfully transmitted. Isolation envelops the room, wrapping it in serenity. It is a bastion where the symphony of creation thrives undisturbed, shielded from the chaos beyond. Often overlooked but vital, furniture and purple lighting wave an atmosphere of comfort and inspiration. Desks, chairs, and equipment racks are arranged meticulously, inviting creators to embark on their sonic journeys. Adequate lighting bathes the room in a warm, inviting glow, beckoning artists to explore the depths of their creativity. Soundproofing, in the form of acoustic panels, bass traps, and richly textured curtains, are unseen guardians of the studio's sanctuary. They form an impenetrable barrier against external noise intrusion, preserving the sacred silence. Recording software, an enigmatic portal to boundless musical landscapes, awaits activation. Sturdy microphone stands, like watchful sentinels, were strategically positioned. Their robust frames were poised to capture the essence of sound in its purest, unadulterated form. Cable management, an intricate dance of organization in a world of chaos, ensures that the creative flow remains unhindered. It is the choreography of order, allowing artists to focus solely on their craft. And, finally, my personal touch arrives. Decorations and personalization breathe life into the room. It is not just a studio; it's s a sacred space, a canvas of creativity waiting for artists to imbue it with their unique souls.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Every artist inspires me. The old and the young. The classic and the soul. We all have a touch of uniqueness we bring to this industry; however, I can specify my favourites, which are The Beatles, whose innovative songwriting and production techniques continue to influence generations of musicians. Bob Dylan is known for his poetic lyrics and ability to tell stories through songwriting. David Bowie is a true master of reinvention and genre-blending in music and fashion. Prince (RIP) is renowned for his musical virtuosity and genre-defying creativity. Quincy Jones, the legendary producer and arranger known for his work with Michael Jackson and many others. Nina Simone is a powerful and versatile singer-songwriter known for activism and emotionally charged performances. Brian Eno is an experimental musician and producer who pioneered ambient music and worked with artists like U2 and David Bowie. Hans Zimmer is a renowned film composer known for his epic and emotive scores in movies like "The Lion King" and "Inception." The world of music is filled with countless inspiring figures across various genres and aspects of production. Each of these individuals has left a lasting impact on the music industry and continues to inspire musicians and creators worldwide.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: As a songwriter, I pour my heart and soul into their vision; if they don't have guidance, I help them create one. I craft original lyrics that align with their vision and convey the intended emotions or messages of the song. I develop catchy and memorable melodies, complementing the vocals and enhancing the overall musical composition. I organize the song's structure, including verses, choruses, bridges, and instrumental breaks, to create a cohesive and engaging musical journey. I can adapt to various musical genres and styles, whether pop, rock, country, hip-hop or any other genre, to cater to the client's preferences and target audience. I also speak and sing in seven languages, which makes it unique if they want to be funky! I have worked closely with musicians, producers, and artists from all different ethnicities to ensure the song aligns with their artistic vision and fits seamlessly within the project. When it comes to revisions, I provide revisions and fine-tune the lyrics and melodies based on client feedback to achieve the desired outcome. Many of my clients love to tailor songwriting to suit specific projects, such as jingles for commercials, theme songs for films, or personal songs for special occasions. I do it all. Most importantly, meeting project timelines and ensuring timely delivery of completed songs is paramount for my clients, and I take this very seriously. Regarding Rights and Royalties, I will always talk about ownership and royalty arrangements, especially in cases where the song may be recorded and commercially released. These tasks may vary depending on the client's needs and the nature of the project. Still, they encompass the core responsibilities of my services in delivering music that resonates with the intended audience and fulfills the client's creative objectives.
