Interview with Tim Kimsey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Kirk Franklin NU Nation record 1998. Knew from the beginning it was going to be a great record. Recording & mixing engineer.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A country EP

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I prefer analogue, but that is becoming a rarity. Analogue because of the saturation factor.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will deliver on time and on budget.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: People

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long will it take? Answer: As long or short as you want. Engineers need to be able to work at the speed of creativity. Sometimes that is fast, sometimes it is very slow. making good decisions up front will save time and money in the long run.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: 1. It's as easy as pushing a button. 2. It can be learned quickly. 3. Software is the answer.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is the END goal? What is the time frame in which you need to be finished? Do you want to be at the mix session?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have your tracks in order and labeled properly if hiring to be mixed. Have an idea what you want your project to sound like and be decisive.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: MacBook Pro, Midas M32 Console, 2 Royer r122's, Cabling

  24. A: Diversified. Have learned to have an open mind and NOT get set in one way of doing things.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Dave Grohl. Have liked his musical ideas from the very beginning.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Consistency is the name of the game. Make a decision and don't change settings in the middle of a project.
