Interview with Soraya Rafat
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would LOVE to work with Lynn Gunn (PVRIS). She has been my #1 inspiration since I started pursuing music seriously. Her first album changed my life at the beginning of my musical journey. Her music really inspired me to grow creatively. She is such a kind and talented person, and she's the reason I pushed myself to get to where I am professionally.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When a song demo is sent to me, I can typically imagine what its missing parts might sound like, mostly for guitar. I will sit down for as long as possible with my guitar and just let all my ideas flow over the song, even if they aren't perfect yet. Whatever comes to my head, whether it is a simple melodic line or a more intricate riff, I immediately record it. Finding the right digital amps and effects for my guitar is also a very important part of the process. I leave multiple takes of different guitar parts for my client to choose from.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Anything! I have mostly been involved in indie pop and rock projects, but I also have experience in other genres like R&B, metal, folk, blues, and jazz.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Guitar tracking and writing.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old. In middle school, I realized I wanted to be a musician that goes on tour and records music in studios. I was finally hired to play professionally at 19 with the artist Frances Forever! I have been touring with them and playing festivals with them for two years now. I have been studying professional music since the fall of 2020 at Berklee College of Music. During my time in Boston, I have played for many local bands and artists, but my most recent one is my indie rock band, Women in Peril, which I joined last year.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is very versatile, ranging from lighter folk sounds to heavier rock riffs, as well as everything in between.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic Pro X on my laptop, two JBL studio monitors, a Scarlett USB interface, an M-Audio MIDI keyboard, my guitars, my pedalboard, a microphone, and my Fender Blues Jr. amp.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: PVRIS, boygenius, Paramore, The Japanese House, The 1975, and HAIM are my biggest inspirations when it comes to my overall sound and my writing. My guitar playing is influenced by guitarists such as Yvette Young (Covet), Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, Julien Baker, Steve Vai, Tim Henson (Polyphia), and Jimi Hendrix.
