What can I say, communication with Charlie was great, he understood exactly what needed and delivered above my expectations. The 1st file that he sent me was perfect and elevates my track to a whole new level. What a talent. Book this guy before he becomes too busy, you wont regret it.

Charlie’s skill, professionalism and passion for creating music of all genres is staggering! As well as fully accomplished song writer he is an unbelievably talented guitar player with the theory and technical skill to help anyone’s musical endeavours. Having worked closely with him in our band I can testify that he is a genuine lovely guy to be around and is very easy and proficient to work with. 10/10 would recommend!

When I decided quit playing for Slice The Cake (deathcore band) to focus on my other projects, Charlie was the first person I had in mind to dep in for my remaining commitments. I knew he's a solid, reliable player and could get the job done well, and he did! He's had a lot more professional experience since then playing with Viscera so I would definitely reccomend him for anything metal or heavy rock or shred! Great timefeel, great hand tone, knows how to dial his tones, write, arrange, and mix his own stuff. Solid, professional metal musician and lovely dude!

I've been working with Charlie on and off for a while now and I think you'll struggle to find someone more dedicated, hard working and invested in writing music than him. He's an out of this world guitarist and will, and can get you whatever you want for your song. Give him a chance and you won't be disappointed I promise. 10/10.

Charlie has been immensely helpful in guiding some ideas for me in my own compositions, providing riff feedback, recording tips for tone & also theoretical knowledge where I’m really lacking. Charlie has a professional setup and sound so whether you just need a few creative ideas, or a full blown track/solo recorded, he has it covered.

Interview with Charlie Michael

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: That would be the recent album I did with my band Viscera entitled carcinogenesis. I was proud of this because not only was it. The first album I’ve been a part of but I contributed five songs to the record. Two of those included orchestration. I also worked on myself so to have it out there in the world is a great feeling for sure!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently at the moment I’m working on a bunch of stuff. Everything from metal, orchestral/soundtrack, even some jazz which I’ve recently started getting into composing.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I’m quite new to this website so I don’t know anyone specifically but from some of the top searches I’ve seen there is a plethora of fantastic players.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for me. I love analog gear and for certain things I would actually say analog but especially for the stuff I do which tends to me big guitars, orchestra, big drums I find for example digital amps just sit better in a mix.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will work my absolute hardest to help achieve the sound you’re hearing in your head and won’t settle until you’re entirely satisfied.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Working with great artists and people who just love music at the end of the day. It’s very inspiring.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Normally it’s just about how long for example it may take to record or compose parts for their songs, as well pricing. My answer for pricing is that we can normally make a deal, especially for projects that are bigger or full song compositions. For the time it may take to record I’m realistic and don’t want to give false hope so if it’s a full song I want it be great so it may be a few days. If it’s a solo or a riff or something shorter it’s normally within a day two days.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Because I’m primarily a metal artist I think for someone who is looking for say a pop song, or pop rock style riff they may look else where, but I have played different styles outside of metal so it’s worth asking as I can definitely still provide for those other styles.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What sound they’re looking for, the kinda feel and tone they would prefer? Basically questions that help me understand what they’re looking for in their songs projects

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure if it’s a song you’re looking for me to compose you have a good idea of what you’re looking for as it’s easier to understand and get the sound you’re looking for, if it’s something like a riff or a solo just to let me know of the key and tempo so it will match well with what you may already have. Just the basics nothing crazy.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Ibanez universe 7 string. Had one a few years ago but don’t anymore and miss it terribly. Fractal axe fx, my laptop, my Scarlett 2i2 interface, and probably my other guitar I’m currently using which is my legator 7 string.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Been playing guitar for 14 years now, playing in bands I would say for over 10 years, and recording my own material for about 9-10 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: For guitar it’s very neo classical inspired for the leads. Guys like Yngwie malmsteen, Jeff loomis have always been big influences and on my overall writing, and John petrucci for a lot of my picking licks and more pentatonic stuff has been a huge influence.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I mean obviously for metal there’s so many like Devin Townsend, decapitated, Trivium etc, but I feel working with some pop artists could be cool obviously in a dream scenario people like Bruno Mars, Charlie puth etc just because it’s different and not what I’d normally go to straight away.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: For me personally it’s just getting a great tone straight away. You can eq the hell out of a track and it will help and make it sit better, but the overall key to a good sound I feel is having that great tone straight away so it gives you something great to work with when taking it to the mixing stage.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: For the most part it is metal music. Typically death metal, deathcore, thrash, power metal, black metal etc. second to that I love writing and composing orchestral arrangements. Definitely inspired by a lot of the big Hollywood scores, but mostly inspired by video game soundtracks. After that I would say I do work on some pop stuff now and again as well which I also enjoy a lot.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I’m definitely very persistent and won’t settle for an okay sounding part or track. If I’m gunna do something I want it to sound the best it can be so I’m very determined to make it that way.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I think I definitely bring my own style to any song I’m a part of. Whether it’s a full song or a solo or a riff I I definitely have a certain style of writing that I bring to the table. Usual precise and more thought out for the most part, but I do also improvise and sometimes even better ideas come from that.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Coming up with the heart of the song to start with. For example coming up with the key part of the song like the chorus, or intro and working from there.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Hp Laptop with an Intel i7 core processer, KRK Rokit studio monitors, Scarlett 2i2 interface. Guitar wise I primarily use my 7 string legator guitar.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Necrophagist, Trivium, Nile, Decapitated, The Beatles, Hans Zimmer, The Carpenters, Dimmu Borgir, Nobuo Uematsu. Many artists of all genres.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording and composing songs. Using live guitar, and midi drums and bass. I primarily specialize In the metal genre, but I also can compose for rock and pop. The second genre I work on the most is orchestral compositions.
