Michael Robert Chadwick on SoundBetter

I'm an experienced producer, mixing engineer and songwriter with a decade and a half of experience. My strong suit lives in the synth rock, art rock, alternative pop world, but I can produce and mix just about anything.

With around 15 years of experience playing, producing, and mixing music for various artists, I'd love to mix for you! I'm a lover of quirky eclectic music but I'm just as comfortable mixing straight up rock and roll or vibrant pop tunes.

I use industry standard software and outboard gear to achieve high quality mixes that will hit hard and leave listeners wanting more!

Interview with Michael Robert Chadwick

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I love working with Weyes Blood. We've been friends for a long time and playing synth on their records is always a fun experience, and a pretty good resume point as well!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Just finished an EP for a client who makes guitar pop, getting ready to mix a post punk record and release a third solo album of my own.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. They both have strong points and weak points and I've always found the debate to be a bit pointless.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That working with me will be easy and you'll be happy with the results.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I like that it's like solving a complicated puzzle made of sounds.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Can you fix it in post? Yes but it's better to rerecord something critical like vocals if there's a big mistake or poor recording.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That you need a million dollars worth of equipment to produce good music.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: It's ok not to know exactly what you want, we can figure that out together.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Polyend synth, yamaha sk50D, drum kit, electric guitar, neuman tlm 103

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Ive been playing various instruments since I was 7 years old, writing music since I was 17, and producing and engineering since I was in my early twenties.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Eclectic vintage pop

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I'd love to work with someone like Blood Orange. I love the production and songwriting on their tracks.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: I love to double or even triple vocals in the chorus and sometimes the verses of a song, with the main vocal in the center and the doubles hard to the left and right with reverb and other effects, creating a lush and wide vocal sound that fills the space but is still focused in the center.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I work on a variety of genres including; indie rock, folk, pop, electronic, and more

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I'm very good at editing both instruments and vocals, as well as effective and transparent vocal tuning.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring a great ear for balance, width and depth as well as a creative and unique approach to creating cohesive and vibrant mixes.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I like to start with drums and percussion, then do vocal treatment, then I like to fit the vocals, drums and bass together as the core of the mix, blending and shaping additional instruments around those three elements.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have 3 sets of monitors that I work from, Yamaha ns10's, yamaha hs5's and mackie mr6's. I Have a Scarlett 18i8 4th gen interface and various outboard gear including shure m267's, Dbx II 128, Lexicon mx200, Roland DEP5, and many hardware synths.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I love Prince's work ethic, his creative output and incredible ear for writing and production are a huge inspiration to me. I'm also inspired a lot by Brian Eno's production techniques and his approach to creative composition.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I do a lot of performing synth and percussion parts, a lot of producing and a lot of mixing usually. I also do additional engineering on quite a few songs.
