Interview with Jackson
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What artists do you want your music to sound like? What genre are you looking for? Do you want something commercially accessible or something fresh and unique? What is your budget?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Clearly articulate the sort of track you are looking for and provide 1-3 reference tracks in the style you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Headphones, maybe a Mic. I don't use a lot of fancy gear, I like in the box stuff and I think the ideas and skill of the producer is massively more important than the gear you use.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started producing in 2016, then went to Berklee College of Music for production and sound design. I got my degree then moved to LA in 2019 and I've been here since working side jobs in the industry to support my music career. I have 7+ years total production experience. I currently work as an Audio Tech at Exchange LA on the weekends while I write music during the week, and play DJ gigs here and there when they are available.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Aggressive, attention grabbing, rhythmic and hook based, aesthetic melodic sections
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Skrillex, positive energy, free flowing creative process, doesn't get stuck on unimportant details
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Keep it simple stupid (KISS)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Bass music, Dubstep, Trap, Drum and Bass, House
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Sound Design
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Unique sound design, strong hooks/motifs, clean and modern mix quality, professional EDM loudness
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Start an idea and get a vibe going. Sound design then write the drop sections. Add FX and transitions. Mix and Master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Minimalist. Laptop with headphones, or I'll go to a lockout to use the barefoot monitors for mixing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Skrillex, Noisia, Isoxo, RL Grime, Moody Good, Mefjus
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full production and writing of track, with full mix and master
