Timothy Kolker on SoundBetter

Let's take the song in your head and make it a reality! I love working with artists to take a song from a voice memo or a bedroom idea to a full production that's uniquely them.

I've been making music for 26 years. Along the way I've picked up several instruments and discovered a passion for arranging and recording music. While I have my own material I've worked on, I'm often most inspired by helping others develop their songs and giving their ideas a voice. I can work with whatever you bring to the table and add as little or as much as you'd like, and trade ideas back and forth with you to land on the right sound.

I'm able to record drums/percussion, guitars, bass, piano, as well as program loops, synth instruments, and string or brass parts.

Interview with Timothy Kolker

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I've made a lot of countdown videos over the years, and making one with Lego bricks and stop motion photography afforded a unique challenge to make a piece of music that matched the fun factor.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A "side B" to complement the "side A" EP my extracurricular band released earlier this year- this will round out the project and complete the album.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: The O.C. Supertones would be amazing- I love ska! I'm a sucker for a good horn section, and their music is so energetic and joyful.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Use what you have to make music that you like, instead of letting a lack of dream gear hold you back.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Contemporary church music, folk rock, indie, instrumentals - it's nice to work on a wide variety!

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: "Home studio" can be a little misleading - it's rare that a home studio can track live drums at a professional level or live track a 5 piece band, but that's what I've set my space up to do. This also allows me to easily move from instrument to instrument easily and get ideas recorded.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Ethan Luck, Andrew Huang, and Rob Scallon.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Fleshing out a song or arrangement idea from the ground up.
