Interview with Ashay Raut
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be firstly to trust me with their work. I humble myself to work as a genuine service provider, and take their money and time seriously.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Sound recorder, Headphone, Laptop, small MIDI keyboard, and an acoustic guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music Producer has been my career since I started working. I have studied Audio Engineering and Music Production. It has been around 7 years working as a professional music producer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style of music is always experimental. I bring instruments from folk cultures and mix them with modern sounding genres.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jacob Collier. Because in every track of his, he tries to bring something different; either in the way he sings or the music he composes.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Break the monotony of chord progressions by inducing unused chords from the same scale.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Indie Pop, Indie, Singer/Songwriter, Hip hop, Christian Contemporary.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: In terms of composition, my strongest skill would be arrangement of the chords. I like to break the monotony of the same chords or chord progression used in specific genres. In terms of production, I can recreate a song very well after listening to what the client sends as a reference song. This way, I give them what they've been listening to and are expecting from their own song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to induce a lot of sounds out of it's intended genre. I keep it subtle so that it isn't highlighted. This brings about a unique factor in the songs I produce for my clients.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process for a song production is: I ask for a rough recording (if any) of the song from the client. One VERY IMPORTANT thing - I ask for a REFERENCE SONG of the same genre they are looking for. If they live nearby, I call them over for a rough vocal recording which helps me then to produce the track around it. Then, I send rough unmixed draft to the client, and take their feedback on the production. If there's additions to be made in terms of instruments, or anything that needs to be remove, it is done now before I start with the mixing of the tracks.
