Interview with Ethan Mott

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: The freelance mixing and a lot of guest solos. Also my band's second and third EPs as well as my first solo indie rock EP.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital will always sound just as good as analog in most scenarios at a fraction of the cost so I'd have to give it to digital.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That it is an instant process. It takes many hours of re-listening to the same part over and over again and making the smallest adjustments to mix a track.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: 'Who are your favourite artists?' for reference of what they want the mix to sound like

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Most of the time, symphonic metal and metalcore.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Dialling in the perfect guitar tone for the specific song.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I start by just listening to the track as it is.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: In my mixing, I take inspiration from Taylor Larson and Joey Sturgis. Composition wise, it's artists like Jason Richardson and Hans Zimmer.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I mostly provide mixing and mastering services for metalcore and symphonic metal clients due to it being a genre I've self-produced for a long time now. I have also worked with other genres and I am quite pliable to most of them. I do prefer working on metal records though because guitars are usually the focus of the instrumental and I am good at getting these types of tones (being a metal guitarist myself)
