Interview with Max Lazbal

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In 2022 I was working on the recording for a Netflix series, called "El amor después del amor" that recounts part of the life of the Argentine artist Fito Páez, from his beginnings, to the recording of the album El amor después del amor, which would end being the best-selling album in the history of Argentine music. It was very special for me because I have been a great admirer of Fito Paez since I was very young, and having been part of this series that today is a success in Latin America fills me with pride. My role was as a live recording engineer, it was a challenge because the music that is heard in the series, from the scenes that recreate rehearsals or shows, was recorded live at the time of filming, to achieve that they did a great casting of musical actors.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on a single by an Argentine artist called Sofia Hervier, produced by my friend Mozart Muzik

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Mozart Muzik

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, in the sum is the fun, the colors, there is no black or white, there is a range of options that for me it does not make sense to have to choose one, analogue, and digital, added, and coexisting.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise a quick job, and a refund of the money if the client is not satisfied with my work

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like the most is to enjoy the whole process, from the moment the song arrives until it is finished, to see how art is born, to get into the head of each artist, to share moments. and obviously, living from music, which is the most beautiful thing in the world. It's not a job if you can enjoy it.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: If it is necessary to go to record in large studios to achieve ultra-professional results in productions. My answer is no, although it is beautiful to go to record in large studios, in the era in which we live, it is already proven that technology gives us the possibility of being able to work in a very professional way, achieving incredible results, if not, let's look the tremendous success of artists like Billie Eilish who recorded the Album in a room and it was a worldwide success, not only because it sounds incredible, but because it is artistically spectacular.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: that a mix can be fixed in the mastering process, and that a song can be fixed in the mixing process. Everything comes with a good production and interpretation of the musicians.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you looking to achieve on a sound level with that song, and how open are you to creative proposals?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Find someone with whom you can share your ideas, who is clear about where you want to go with each production, and who enjoys each process

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: The Macbook, Apollo Twin, Some kind of electric drop like a battery, Neuman u87 and Water.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a child, my father had a home studio in my house, I'm a drummer so my curiosity was to learn how to beat the drums to be able to listen to it. my first approach, through the game, was to record radio programs on cassettes, to later edit them and make music compilations.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: surgical, meticulous and open to criticism and advice

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Rosalia, the way she works his voice seems really spectacular to me

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: understand that the most important thing is the music, not the means to get it, express emotions, and not technically interfere with that path. teamwork is the solution. if they sound good, that's good.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Urban, Trap, Reggaeton, Pop Rock

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Fast editing

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: put myself at the service of each song, without interfering in what the artist wants to express, understanding that we are a means of helping the artist to show off his art.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First of all, listening to the song several times to understand what each artist wants to express, and what it makes me feel, without thinking about technical processes. then, see what that song needs technically to achieve that goal. I usually start with the voices, which for me are the most important thing in each song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My setup studio is made up of analog and digital systems, combining the best of both worlds. I have Neve preamps and equalizers, Tube-Tech and Empirical Labs compressors, and effects processors such as the mythical Yamaha SPX 990, added to a large collection of plugins such as Soothe 2, SSL, Soundtoys, Antares, Fab Filter, Valhalla, Celemony , Plugin Alliance, Softube. Managed by a Universal Audio interface, and controlled by Pro Tools 2023, as well as Ableton Live, although I use it more for music production processes. In my way of seeing things, the best thing is to have the flexibility of being able to have tools to add to the musical process of each artist.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Mike Dean, Jaycen Joshua, Javier Fracchia, Evlay

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing, Mastering, Producing
