Interview with blueabsentee
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it takes lots of money or secret knowledge. The good information is all around and it just takes some experience to know what the good advice is. No amount of money will ever fix a poorly executed mix.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your creative vision for your song or production? What are you looking to get out of a professional mix/master?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just to have a clear idea of what you want in your mix, or production and that I am willing to work hard to ensure you are happy with the end result and that your vision for your song becomes a reality.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Strat, my princeton, a nuemann u67, my Apollo twin, and Macbook
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working on production since I was in my senior year of high school, so about 8 years now and I have been playing guitar and recording for much longer than that.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a bare bones approach that can range from intimate to extremely characterful, I aim to have strong dynamics within my productions.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Mac Miller, he had such a unique way of marrying genres and mixing heavy themes with beautiful melodies and hooks
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Understanding that your ears have to drive all of your decisions, not necessarily the most expensive gear or premium plugins really matter. Making decisions for the mix as a whole and then working in has vastly changed the quality of my productions over time.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on my own music which is in the realm of indie pop/rock, I have worked on hip-hop music and rock and even a few country songs.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have good ears, that drive all of my mixing decisions.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a unique ear, and I realize not everyone will be interested in my sound. I can make your music sound better in a clean and professional way if that's what you're looking for. But if you're looking for a bit of something special I will also offer my unique take and character on your music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to listen to the song, get an idea of what stands out to me, ensure that aligns with the goals and vision of the creator and then get to work. I will typically work on the song in a long session until it is 80% of the way to finished. After that a few more short sessions to iron out the final 20% and then will take feedback for revisions.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Main setup revolves around a macbook pro and an Apollo Twin X interface, a Fender Strat and Princeton, various synthesizers (OP1), and samplers (SP404mkII, SX) and a pedalboard, production is mainly in the box with premium plugins, with expansion to outboard gear being the next goal.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Rick Rubin, Andrew Scheps, Steve Albini
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly mixing and mastering, but I will also play instruments on tracks and compose as well.
