Interview with Tomi Temp

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One that comes to mind was an adaptation of a selection of songs from an artist who wanted to turn them into acoustic versions. I was given full liberty to "re-arrange them into your style". That was the first time a client contacted me because of MY style and likes rather than theirs. The end result was a fun mix of their and my world.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A couple of productions and VOs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Unfortunately, no. I'm new to this platform.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Mostly digital, but depending on the project (and the requeriments or needs of the customer). It's faster and easier, but there's never just one way of doing it.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will always give you my best. Simple as that.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I simply cannot put that in words. It fills me, it completes me. It makes me feel content with my everyday.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Are you interested?". And the answer will always be yes. Of course, then it would depend on different factors, but my interest in working with anything related to music/audio will always be there. There's always the chance to learn more with each experience.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Customers usually understimate my rates and prices --I've been told I'm "too cheap" for my quality of work. But I live in a country where that "cheap" rate not only can afford me to live and make this my job, but also allows me to reach out to many more customers of the underground scene who have AMAZING ideas and songs but usually no one who can take their ideas into creations.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always ask for two things: "would you detail me your project?" and "when do you need it done?".

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Feel free to contact me, ask me, discuss me your ideas. And then, if you have any doubts, feel free to ask again.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: An audio interface, a mic, a PC/Mac, an acoustic guitar and headphones. That's how I started and that's how I'd always start again.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started around 2017 as assistant at Studios, while working on my own project whenever I had the chance. Then, during the Pandemic I was able to set up my own studio and make it my everyday full-time job. From there, I've work with 300+ projects and I'm extremely thankful for that everyday.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Direct, honest, careful and passionate.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There's a part of me that would love to work with Guns N' Roses because I'm sure I could do a better work in terms of production than what they've been posting lately. But the other part would love it cause it would be a caress to the younger me who grew up listening to them. Besides from that, I'm used to work with lots of artists from the underground scene, and you can't put in words how much heart you find in their creations; and being able to develope their ideas into fully made songs is an absolutely beautiful experience.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Detect what works in a song, enhance it, and make the song work around it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly rock music (either more pop-based or heavier/metal genres), but I'm open to almost any genre. I had a blast working with Orchestral arrangements, musicals, Tangos, etc.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I'm passionate with every project I'm involved. I believe I'm able to recognize the essence of each song/demo/etc., and exploit it so it can reach its full potential.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A new sight, a different point of view. I like to maintain what's working, and tweak and adjust the parts that could be enhanced. It's a subtle balance between what I feel and what I think it could work.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to discuss and define the procedure with the client before I/we start working on it; what's the aim, how should we proceed, etc. Pre-production is key for the project to succeed. Once I/we start working on it, I like to send demos during the process, feedback is very important for me.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I built a cabin-like home studio which is mainly intended for acoustic recordings; but also allows me to have a clean listening in order to be able to detect imperfections when mixing/mastering.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Mike Clink, Rick Rubin, Bill Price

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I'm mostly used to produce Instrumental Arrangements; record Ads & Acting Voice-Overs; write and record Vocal Melodies; adapt and arrange acoustic versions; mix and master.
