Interview with Thomas Boulousis
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise my clients to provide them with exactly the music they are looking for to breathe life to their project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music composition has been my go-to past-time since forever, to the point where making it my job was nothing if not obvious. Composing music is just fun and exciting for me! Every time I hit "bounce" on a Logic project or "export to PDF" on a Sibelius project, I feel such a rush of positive emotions that I end up finding myself thinking "What should I work on next?".
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: One very important request I have for my prospective clients is for them to provide me with at least 3 examples of pre-existing music that is similar to the music they are looking for. That way, I can more easily adapt to their exact wishes and compose music that is suitable to their project without needing many large revisions.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My musical style is a rather flexible one, although I do often tend to focus more on the melodic aspect of my composition above anything else. I love writing melodies that are memorable and easy to sing.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialise in orchestral and instrumental music, with or without electronic elements, but I can also compose (and have composed) music in a number of other styles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I believe my strongest skill is my flexibility. Although I am a classically trained musician and most of my experience lies in the orchestral and instrumental soundworld, I have also composed in styles such as: Jazz, Big Band Jazz, Fusion, Instrumental Rock, Metal, Hip Hop and others. I thus am able to adapt to a wide range of musical styles and compose music suitable for the idiom as necessary.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have a rather flexible work process, which I adapt to each specific project. If, for example, I need a strong visual understanding of the music, I usually sketch my ideas on Sibelius (a software designed for making music scores) and then, if necessary, I export them to Logic (a Digital Audio Workstation). If, on the other hand, I need to work with synthesizers or digitally altered sound, I just use Logic. On Logic, I have a number of pre-made templates -mostly orchestral- but I often end up tweaking them to suit each project, usually by adding more instruments.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly specialise in providing music for media (films, commercials, etc), as well as for live performance. I am particularly experienced in orchestral and classical musical settings, but I have lately been getting into jazz and other genres as well.
