Such a privilege to work with Cole (and Mallory!) and provide a cello part on this track - a beautiful song, beautifully sung. He's a lovely, warm and communicative guy and to be given freedom to respond to his music as I felt was a total pleasure. Very happy indeed to be a part of this project and to make this connection.

I really enjoyed laying down some piano for Cole on a wonderful indie folk tune he's working on. He was great to work with and the process was smooth and professional. Hope to do another again soon. Cheers!

Cole provided a very clean and rounded mandolin track for my song! Will definitely be using him for mandolin again for future songs!

This was my first time working with Cole, and hopefully, not the last! I was provided with a beautiful, well-produced track to add clawhammer banjo to, plus a chord chart with lyrics - made my end of the job super easy breezy! Thank you thank you!

Cole is an amazing engineer and musician! After getting to both play live gigs with Cole and hiring him for mixing and mastering, he exceeded my expectations in both areas! He's very professional and did everything that I asked him to. His mix sounded very crisp and clear, and his master brought the whole song to life. I wrote up some production notes for him and he did everything that I asked him to within the context of the song. Highly recommend using Cole for any tracking or mixing that you might need!

Interview with Cole Shannon

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Honestly I love just getting the chance to be a part of other folk's art & creative journey, there's nothing quite like it!

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: In a lot of scenarios, clients can already hear what they want in their head. I typically ask clients for a couple of reference tracks that come closest to that sound to help inspire my mix or perfomrnace.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: My home studio has just about everything I need to get your mix from rough demo to radio-worthy master! I do all of my mixing and recording in Protools. I have a lot of usefull plugins too, like Slate Trigger2 for drums and UAD Spark for those classic comps and warm pre-amps! I'm fully equiped to provide high quality acoustic and electric guitar recordings through my collection of microphones, amps, & IR's.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I'm currently working on an EP for an independent artist in TX!

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Analog for anything guitar related (because I am a huge gear nerd... and maybe addict) but digital for everything else! It's just more consistent.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I find myself working on Indie music most of the time!

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I bring a balanced yet creative approach to my mixing & guitar playing. I will typically use subtractive methods (like EQ & compression) first to do most of the heavy lifting before coming in with the more flashy, in-your-face type of effects to achieve that sound you've been looking for and make the final product POP!

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I place a lot of emphasis on really figuring out what my client wants to hear in their track before I even touch the DAW or my instrument. Once I have a good bead on that, the creative process begins!

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: My home recording & mixing journey has always been very inspired by YouTubers like Graham Cochrane and Joe Glider. I've learned a lot from them, and I love their approach to mixing and the client-provider relationship. Guitar players like John Mayer, David Hislop, Tommy Emmanuel have had a huge impact on my guitar playing & style.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Most often I work with clients as a mix engineer, doing remote guitar recording sessions, or sometimes both!
