Interview with Felipe Phyre
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Despite having worked with several famous Brazilian artists, the project I am most proud of is the latest EP released by "Margaridas." I had the honor of producing, mixing, and mastering this EP. I hold a special appreciation for this work because not only are the artists from my city, but I also have a deep connection and synergy with them during the production process. The EP is titled "Debaixo da Minha Saia" and is available on major digital platforms.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I'm working on a mix and master of 2 albums and producing 3 EPs.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Juliah is an exceptional singer-songwriter from Brazil who is currently based in Los Angeles. I have had the absolute pleasure of working with her in person, and I can confidently say that her vocals and writing skills are truly remarkable. As someone who is new to the platform, I am excited about making new connections and collaborating with talented artists.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Each brings a specific texture. Many times I don't use my analog equipment because the plug-ins achieved better the sound that I was looking for at the moment, and other times the analog delivers better than the plug-ins, so it depends on the sound you want.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I'll dive with my soul into each project, knowing that each song is unique.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Taking something from my mind and transforming it into a sound. Causing numerous sensations in millions of people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you fix recording issues in the mix? Depending on the problem, it is possible to resolve them. However, the quality of the recording plays a significant role in the final outcome of the product. If all the stages of the music production are executed with excellence, the final product will be of high standard.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That analog gears are better than plug-ins and vice-versa. Each has its own texture and character, and what determines which is better is the sound you're looking for.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I like to understand the direction the client wants to take with the music. I always ask for a reference song so that I can grasp the desired aesthetic and feeling they wish to convey.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I'd say listen to the songs I have worked on so that you can understand the aesthetic that I like to incorporate into the sounds.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A pair of NS10 monitors, an Antelope interface, Telefunken U47 microphone, a Neve 1073 preamp, and a Pultec EQP-1A.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working with music for over 10 years. I started as a performer and songwriter. Today, I work in production, recording, mixing, and mastering.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a bold style. I let my ears speak, and if necessary, I make drastic changes to the sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If I had to choose any artist currently, I would pick Doja Cat or Rosalía.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When producing a track, I typically put myself in the listener's shoes. I strive to create the music that I would personally enjoy listening to. The techniques I employ are simply intended to meet the needs and expectations of our ears as spectators of our own creation.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Pop music. Within this style, I often blend other genres such as Afrobeat, Reggaeton, Trap, and more.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest skill is mixing, as it is the niche I have studied and dedicated myself to for 10 years in my career.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I aim to convey the emotion that the music demands. Every effect or added element is carefully considered to enhance the listener's sonic experience. Additionally, I like to ensure that all elements are highlighted, allowing each part of the music to occupy its rightful place.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: In mixing and mastering, I like to work with digital tools because I can achieve the desired result in less time, allowing me to easily meet client deadlines. Additionally, I enjoy using plugins that emulate analog sound, such as "The God Particle," for example.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio has a Control/Mixing room and a Recording room. I work with an Antelope Discrete 8 audio interface and some recording equipment such as the Warm WA73, Art Pro VLA II, DBX 266XL, AKG 214, etc. My reference monitors are the Yamaha HS8.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My two biggest inspirations in mixing are Jaycen Joshua and Mosty. In production, I draw a lot of inspiration from Ruxell, MVSIS, and Linden Jay.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly work with production, mixing, and mastering. However, my greatest expertise lies in being a mixing engineer.
