Interview with Richie Worrell
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I play a primarily country style of electric guitar, but with influences from all over the music landscape. As a Tele picker, my playing is of course informed by chicken pickin’ greats like Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, and Danny Gatton. But I also draw influence from Eric Johnson, Jeff Buckley, Edge, Andy Summers, and 90’s/2000’s indie/alternative. I place an emphasis on tone and atmosphere, not just shredding and chops. Most of the time - less is more, and it’s all about serving the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I believe communication is key to doing a good job for clients. I want to understand the artist’s vision thoroughly before committing anything to tape. I always ask for reference songs, and usually my process begins there. Once I feel like I have a good feel for the song, I will put the demo I’ve been given into Logic, and just spend some time jamming and digesting the song. Then, I begin slowly building layers from there, according to the artist’s notes. When I feel that what I’ve contributed is elevating the song, I send a rough sample mix to the client for feedback.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a variety of guitars and amps, but mostly I tend towards Telecasters and EL84 style amps. For amps, I have a Trinity TC15 and a Dr Z ZWreck Jr that I track with often and they work well on 95% of what I do. When I need a more classic American amp sound, I will use a Dr Z Cure which is more in line with something like a Deluxe Reverb. Often I will also use modelers such as TONEX and Quad Cortex, as well as amp plugins from Neural DSP, which makes it easy to capture raw DI guitar stems and re-amp them to find the right tone. For mic’ing cabs I use a trusty SM57 and sometimes I will add an additional small diaphragm condenser like a Slate ML2. My interface is a Solid State Logic SSL12. I track using Logic Pro, and monitor through a pair of Presonus Eris E5’s.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have many influences and inspirations, but from a guitar playing and production standpoint, the guys who inspire me the most to do good work when the red light comes on are studio legends like Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, Tom Bukovac, Steve Lukather, Larry Carlton, and many more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is electric guitar tracking - specifically on Country & Americana style songs. I tend to lay down a lot of telecaster-oriented guitar sounds on songs, and I specialize in lead playing with a style similar to Brent Mason, Brad Paisley, & Pete Anderson.
