Interview with Eddy “Versatile” Keyz
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with is Bruno Mars. Having that Old School New School flavor compliments very well.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: There are no rules just guidelines.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on R&B, Neo Soul, CCM/Gospel, Pop, and Hip-Hop/Trap.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: One of my strong skills is simply listening to my clients. I know that sounds so cliche and plain but thats a skill to have for clients. Sometimes an artist/client can't communicate what they mean/need. Truly listening to them is what makes the difference and finding out what they need.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is excitement, dynamics, and stability.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is first find the heart and intent of the song/writer. It's important for me to compliment the artists vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Very simple setup. Not a lot of bells and whistles as far as outboard gear. Under the hood I have various instruments, and plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: So many great producers inspire me such as Timbaland, Bryan Michael Cox, Warryn Campbell, Teddy Riley, and my all time favorite Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Music production, and mixing/mastering.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Other than many artist’s albums, one thing that I’m very proud of would have to be my first play (Trapped in the Manger) it’s a biblical parody of R. Kellys (Trapped in the Closet) I was the writer, producer, director, actor, and visionary.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I’m working on my production album. This album’s will display my versatility. Hint the name “Versatile” this album will have a little bit of everything from country to trap.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m brand new to SoundBetter, unfortunately I don’t know anyone.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I really love analog for the warmth and grit it brings however I would have to go with digital, mainly for mixing recall.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: One thing I promise to everyone that I work with is that you will receive my heart. Meaning I’ll get to know you on a personal level, and you’ll always receive my best.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: On thing I love most about my job is that I’m able to contribute to an artist’s success.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Believe it or not something the top 2 questions I get from clients are; Do you have auto tune? And are you with BMI or ASCAP. Yes I have auto tune and I’m with ASCAP.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The main question I ask them is; What is something you haven’t been able to receive from another producer
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, MIDI, Mic, Speakers, and a mattress. I mean I have to at least get some good sleep.
