Jay RP on SoundBetter

A journey that never ends... Music has so many aspects. It is an everlasting journey to discover and learn all of it. Not only harmony and melody but also rhythm, syncopation, articulation, phrasing and dynamics are key in music. I feel privileged to be able to spend my life with music and to be in a journey that never ends.

I have been involved in music quite a long time, initially started as a musician, later as bandleader, artist manager and now as writer/producer where my focus is on songwriting, producing and releasing music in various styles.
My specialty is what I call retro-pop, contemporary pop music with a twist of the 50-ties sound.
I also have great affinity with classical music and pop/rock country.
My primary service is producing/mixing/mastering but I could also help with songwriting to get the song "finished".

I have been educated very well in both songwriting (I was a platinum member of the Songwriting Academy UK), as well as in producing (am a member of a number of technical producer academies), have my own studio here in the Netherlands where I could easily process stems that have been recorded somewhere on site, play guitar, bass, keys and drums, do both lead and backing vocals and I have an extended network of excellent studio musicians who help me in case I need them. And am skilled in call it the post production process when a song has been released and what is needed to get the proper visibility of the fans.

I have bundled all my activities under a company called JR-Productions

Interview with Jay RP

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My lastes single ' Since that night ' which I wrote (music&lyrics) some years ago but have totally re-worked into a contemporary pop song with a 50-ties sound twist

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: On a instrumental song called L'oiseau, call it cinematic music

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: no I just arrived here

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: in the past analog, now digital because digital has less cables, less hum in the sound but to be honest, analog sound has more warmth which I try to achieve by using the proper plugins.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: a great production that is radio ready

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: being busy with music, my great passion and be creative and be in a learning curve to pick up the lastest technical tricks, in other owrds, to be on a journey that never ends

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: My opinion about their song; I always give an honest but fair answer and give my feedback how the song could be improved in a technical (chords, arrangements) and emotional (lyrics, chords choice) way

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: that the work is a piece of cake and is 'just' music

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask them for a reference track of the song they would like to sound like and what is their motivation to make a song cq music

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to the productions in terms of sound but also in terms of musicality and creativity

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: With no electricity?... my guitar, a capo, a bongo, paper, pencil, with electricity... my guitar, a capo, a bongo, my laptop, my phone

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Started as singer/guitar player, afterwards band leader, artist manager and then singer songwriter/producer. I am over 20 years in music

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Catchy pop songs that make people happy with strong melody lines and in a 'classical' format (verse, pre chorus, chorus, bridge) captured

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: there are many but if I have to choose I would say Ed Sheeran; he is a great songwriter with catchy songs and is able just with his guitar and looper to fill a stadium with 80 thousand people (Wembley). I also like his collabs with other artists. But would not say no either if Charly Puth would knock on my door.. :)

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Do a proper gain staging when starting the production process, in other words, bring first everything on a right volume level... and a bonus tip: do it perfectly right as the basis when recording

  38. A: Re writing; I usually start on the guitar with a melody line and some simple words that fit to my ears under the chords I play; then further write the lyrics and finish the song as a basis to start the production, finding the right sounds, arrangements and record everything. The next step is mixing the song incl. plugins and finally do the mastering process to get a radio ready product. Re producing: I usually get some stems of the client and some rough ideas about a song that is for my the starting point to further develop and arrange the song, I give proper shape to it in finding the right order (verse, pre chorus, chorus, bridge) and sometimes adjust some of the lyrics. Then as above described I start the production process
