Interview with Perry Barton
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: After we discuss the project, you send me 1) an editable document containing the lyrics, 2) an instrumental track, and 3) a guide vocal track. If available, the tempo in BPM is helpful. I then sing the a portion of the song and send you a draft-quality MP3 of track plus vocal to make sure I'm on the right page with the vocal style. Once I know that the style is right, I send you a similar MP3 of the entire song for your approval. If revisions are needed, this is where they happen. Upon your approval of the entire performance, I deliver the uncompressed WAV file(s) of the vocal track(s) to you.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen, listen, LISTEN to the client!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, R&B, Country, Rock, Americana, and Jazz are a few of the genres I cover.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The ability to interpret a lyric and "sell" it to the listener; range (baritone to high tenor); clarity/enunciation. The fact that I'm also a songwriter gives me a keen understanding of song structure, dynamics, mood/tone—all the things that make a song great!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As my profile says, passion and precision! A vocal must convey emotion AND be performed with the right technique.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Digital Performer; Universal Audio UAD-2 card loaded with world-class plug-ins; FireFace 800 and Focusrite preamps; professional studio mics from Audio-Technica, RØDE, Shure, and others
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Lead and background vocals for song demos, custom projects, and advertising
