Interview with Shannon Brielle
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm very proud of getting a cut on Purple Kiss's album Cabin Fever. I wrote the song over a year before it was released, and it was amazing to see it go from the little demo I recorded in my one bedroom apartment to a song sung by an iTunes #1 charting artist. The girls did a great job with it and I'm so happy to have been a part of it.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm working on songs for some of the biggest names in Korea, and I'm beginning to book sessions with writers in LA.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the moment when I find the perfect melodic line for a song. It's like cracking a code or solving a puzzle. I always pat myself on the back like, "Wow! I did it!" hahhaha
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Is there a reference track for the song? What is the age or maturity level of the artist who might sing this song? What is the artist's vocal range?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been writing music since I was in elementary school, but I didn't pick up a guitar until I was 12. From then on I was constantly writing silly songs about middle school boy drama. In college, I composed two full length musicals and released my first full length album. After graduating, I joined pop princess Kady Rain in writing her first album. In 2020 I allowed my love of Korean music to take me across the globe and entered the Korean music industry. Since then, I have been actively working with producers and composers worldwide writing songs for the Korean market. This journey has been so fun and I can't wait to see where it takes me next!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically when I receive a track I will listen for the song structure, mark the blueprint in my DAW, and then give a few melody passes. Afterwards, I find the best melodies and start writing lyrics. Once the lyrical content of the song presents itself, the rest of the song comes pretty easily. When the topline is finished I send it off to the producer to see if they vibe with it. Once I get confirmation, I build out the harmonies and finish the rest of the vocal production. I then send the stems to the producer.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I get inspiration from artists like Hikaru Utada, Ariana Grande, Joni Mitchell, India Arie, Paramore, Larry Graham, and more. I grew up on funk, emo, soul, and pop music. I also love musical theatre.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do toplining and vocal production work for my clients. If I am given a track I can create a fitting melody and harmonies to make it shine. I then record, tune, and edit the vocals as needed.
