Interview with Joel Hammond

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I just finished a round of remixes; I'm also currently producing an EP for a client, as well as working on: a song for my own project, a cover that I'm working on with another producer, and starting out a new song with a brand new client!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Alex Acheson is an incredibly talented electronic/pop producer who is always a pleasure to talk and work with. Highly recommend!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital! Analog emulation is so accurate now that I can barely tell the difference, and the portability of a DAW on a laptop is unbeatable.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will always match the artist's commitment to their art and produce something that both myself and the artist will be proud of.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That we need to be in the studio together to make a song! Living in New Zealand means I mostly work online - this is one of the reasons communication is so important to me.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What is the idea behind the song? What instruments can you hear on the song? What emotions do you want the listener to feel when they hear your song? What existing songs would you use as a reference, and what do you like about them?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Never be afraid to reach out to a producer to talk about your ideas. Even if we don't end up working together, we mostly just like talking to artists about their art :)
