Interview with Ryan Hartnett

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I just opened my own studio in Los Angeles and currently accepting new clients.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I embrace a hybrid approach that combines the best aspects of analog and digital technologies. While digital tools offer precision, flexibility, and recallability, analog gear can provide unique warmth and character. The combination allows me to achieve the best of both worlds for an optimal sonic outcome. I love to use analog gear for the recording process and keep the mixing and mastering process in the box.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: My promise to clients is to provide a professional and high-quality service that respects their artistic vision. I am committed to delivering exceptional mixes and masters that meet or exceed their expectations.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: What I love most about my job is the opportunity to collaborate with talented artists and contribute to their creative visions. Being able to shape and enhance the sonic landscape of a song and see it come to life is incredibly rewarding.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Customers often ask about turnaround time, pricing, and revisions. My answers depend on the specific project, but I strive to provide a clear timeline, transparent pricing based on project complexity, and a reasonable number of revisions to achieve the desired results.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: A common misconception is that mixing and mastering can fix all issues in a recording. While they can greatly enhance the sound quality, it's essential to capture high-quality recordings from the start to ensure the best possible outcome.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I typically ask about their artistic influences, desired sonic characteristics, and any specific references they have in mind.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: When hiring a mixing and mastering engineer, it's important to find someone who understands and appreciates your musical vision. Look for someone with a strong portfolio, clear communication, and a collaborative approach to ensure they can bring out the best in your music.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I have been working as a professional mixing and mastering engineer for over 5 years. I started my journey by studying audio engineering and music production, and then gained experience through internships and assisting established engineers before establishing my own studio.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My style is characterized by a balance between technical precision and artistic sensitivity. I aim to bring clarity, depth, and impact to the music while respecting the artist's vision and maintaining a natural and organic sound.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would love to work with a forward-thinking and innovative artist like Pharrel. His unique approach to songwriting and production, along with his attention to detail, would provide an exciting creative collaboration opportunity.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: When it comes to mixing, use reference tracks as a guide to help you achieve the desired sonic qualities. Compare your mix to commercially released songs in a similar genre to ensure it matches the tonal balance, dynamic range, and overall quality of professional productions.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I have experience working with various genres, including Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, and EDM. I am versatile and enjoy the opportunity to work on diverse styles of music.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill is my ability to identify and address the unique characteristics and challenges of each project. Whether it's balancing intricate arrangements, achieving clarity in dense mixes, or bringing out the desired energy and emotion, I adapt my approach to suit the specific needs of the music.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring a trained ear, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of how to enhance the emotional impact of a song. By carefully balancing and shaping the elements, I strive to bring out the best qualities of each track and create a professional and engaging listening experience.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My typical work process begins by carefully listening to the client's reference tracks and discussing their artistic vision. I then organize and balance the tracks, apply EQ, compression, and other processing techniques to shape the sound, and add creative effects as needed. Once the mix is finalized, I move on to mastering to optimize the audio for different playback systems.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio setup consists of a well-treated acoustical environment, high-quality monitors, and a variety of industry-standard plugins and outboard gear. I use Pro Tools to handle the mixing and mastering process efficiently.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I find inspiration from a wide range of musicians and producers, but some notable figures include Jaycen Joshua, Louis Bell, and Dale Becker. Their innovative approaches to production, mixing, and mastering continually push the boundaries of what is sonically possible.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: As a mixing and mastering engineer, my most common type of work involves receiving individual tracks from clients and combining them into a cohesive and polished final mix. I then apply mastering techniques to enhance the overall sound quality and prepare the music for distribution.
