Interview with Arnoult Malfait
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Eclectic. I play guitar and piano/synths for over ten years and combine this with electronic & contemporary elements.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Used to play in an indie rock band, currently I spend a lot of time with electronic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Overviewing the project, keeping the overall perspective and a solid musical background.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Depends on what the artist his or her original idea is. If it lacks variation, I explore the possibilities (chords/ melodies) within the mood/vibe of the idea. Also the opposite is possible, where choices have to be made in order to keep the song coherent. If it lacks structural arrangement, I like to separate the themes/parts of the song and play around with them to find a natural flow or build-up. If there is a lack of instrumental arrangement, it is a matter of filling up those blanks. Obviously, all those decisions are made together with the artist.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I do a lot of work in the box. ProTools and Ableton are my two main DAW's.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce tracks from start or I help artists shaping their ideas and finishing a song. Apart from that I mix a lot of tracks where I 'm not involved in the production.
