Interview with Engineer Flip

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There are a few that come to mind, but my clients from the Canary Islands to a leap on faith and came here to the US. They booked a flight and came to the studio because they were unhappy with their sound back home. We goot the song just how they wanted it and I remember them calling me saying "You nailed it Flip" and I responded "We nailed it buddy".

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on whatever is being sent my way currently. If it is an EP, an album, a single, etc. I am open to work and open for business.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not currently on the platform, but there are a few good professionals that I would refer any day of the week.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Currently I would say digital, but analog has its benefits of course. The power of technology to virtually capturer and be able to use the emulated hardware is amazing. For that reason I will say digital because in 2023 you need to be mobile.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to deliver a quality product. I promise to deliver professional, quality service. I promise to not waste your money and/or time. I promise to be honest and transparent every step of the way.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The music, the freedom, the people, the communication, the reactions, the potential.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: 1) How long have you been doing this? - Over a decade now 2) How long does it usually take to mix a song? - 2-4 hours typically, but depends on the song. 3) Is your job as difficult as is looks? - Or is it as easy as you make it seem to be?

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People think being a mixing engineer is easy, but that is not true. You have to love doing this and be passionate about it to succeed. You can hear the love come through the speakers when it is properly mixed. I love being a mixing engineer.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: How did you know the music was ready? When did you create this? Are you ready?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just make sure you are ready to work. Make sure all your files are organized and named properly. Make sure your budget is in place, be direct with what you want, and let me know your plans for the music so I can be in the loop.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Headphones, Laptop, Amp, Loudspeaker, and an Apollo interface

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started out as an artist in junior high and high school. I began to get into engineering about a decade ago or maybe a bit longer. This has become my path as I began to lose interest in being an artist. The background is more of my scene as I can really get up under the hood and see what's going on. I just love improving music.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is my style. I guess we can call that unorthodox, but I love and trust it. All of the greats are unorthodox and then people began to try to emulate so I believe that is a good trait to have.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Jay-Z or Lil Wayne because their work ethic is top notch and I would love to be in the presence of such greatness (recording session lol). On a mixing level I would love to work with someone with a huge voice like Beyonce, Drake, Adele, someone of that stature.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Trust your gut& listen with your ears, not your eyes!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-hop of course, R&B, pop music, reggae, afro beat, etc. I have worked with artists from numerous countries working on various genres of music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I feel that my strongest skill is that I listen and pay attention. I don't try to overtake the song because of my expertise, but in fact I will come along with you for the ride and make sure I enhance everything that is given to me in the files.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring enhancements and constructive criticism, but most importantly I bring respect to a song. I don't overstep on your vision as the artist or producer, but I do input suggestions where I deem necessary. If I feel like something will improve the song, it is my duty to at least run the idea by the creatives. What happens from there is subjective and it all comes down to collaboration and communication.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to get to work early. Wake up get the kids to school and head to the laboratory. I don't mind working at any point of the day, but the morning is my preference when my brain is fresh.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Currently I am running ADAM Audio A7V flat response monitors for mixing and ADAM Audio T10S subwoofer as well to achieve that present low end . Mix cloud is in place along with the necessary bass traps and acoustic panels precisely placed. I am running the sound thru the Apollo Twin and Behringer XTouch 32 fader Mixer. Pro Tools is the DAW of choice, but we also use Logic Pro, Ableton Live, & Native Instruments Maschine to name a few.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am a big Jay-Z fan along with Young Guru, Leslie Brathwaite, Dave Pensado, CLA and numerous other renowned mixing and mastering engineers around the world.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I handle all things audio for my clients and I do it with pride. I record, edit, and mix.
