Jonathan Woyke on SoundBetter

I’ve been teaching myself mixing & mastering for over 11 years in live and studio settings. Let me help you craft your dance masterpiece and let’s get it pumping in the clubs.

Hello there! My name is Jon. I’ve been making music for myself under the moniker Joykey for over 12 years and posting online.

I’ve found over the years that I really have fun with mixing, being a perfectionist, and trying to dial in the sound to perfection. I do specialize in electronic dance music, however there are often multiple elements to dance music so I am open to any genre, all music is composed of sound waves, their lifeblood.

I have also found myself wanting to be able to help people, and what better way than in a passion that we share. I am a producer and mixer so I can see both sides of the coin. Let’s make something amazing together!

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

I had the pleasure of working with Jonathan Woyke on the mixing and mastering of my song, and I must say, their expertise and attention to detail truly brought the track to life. The mix was exceptionally well-balanced, with each instrument and vocal sitting perfectly in the sonic landscape. The clarity and depth achieved through their mastering work were impressive, creating a cohesive and professional sound.

I was very pleased with Jonathan’s work, especially his versatility and commitment to clarity. Quick to grasp the sound profile I was after (based on references), he worked with me to help my vision come to life. Strong mixing principles prove a well-developed, passionate understanding of engineering.

Interview with Jonathan Woyke

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise to get your project to a point where you are happy with it, whether that means releasing the song or not, and to help your dream become a reality. Because I've been in the same situation, and didn't have anyone to help. I am here for you!

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love to sit and make the project perfect. There is a part in my brain that clicks when I manage to carve out a frequency and make the song sound incrementally better, like refining a sharp blade. It brings me a lot of satisfaction.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Always save copies. There have been many times where I'm fairly happy with a mix or composition, and I start to make changes to the same part of a song, while saving along the way. By that point, the nature of the song has entirely changed and I don't like it as much anymore. If you save copies, you can always go back and start from a point where the vision you had was the clearest.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I've definitely acquired the knack for using my ears. As a producer, it's frustrating early on to really understand what "using your ears" really means. It's a long journey of persistence and practice to be able to mix and understand how every sound needs to be tuned. I've found it immensley satisfying to completely stop relying on automated plug-ins and really just adjust everything manually, according to how I hear it. I also think I am very good at translating the client's wishes when it comes to the mood and feel of a song, into the mix.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: When I retrieve my client's stems or project, I treat it as if it were my own project, as I am also a producer. I load it into Ableton, and listen to the song several times. I start with some volume adjustments, from track to track. Then I would start carving out the most obvious clashing frequencies; trusting my ears. Then I may start blending certain stems together, for example: Grouping together all vocal stems and gluing them together with compression and a slight bit of distortion. Then I would start getting into finer details and perhaps adding a small amount of FX sends with the permission of the artist. Of course, along the way I would be updating the client to make sure the changes are aligning with their vision.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I have a modest studio setup. Adam T5V Studio Monitors, Adam Sub, Audio Technica ATH-M50's, Ableton Push 2, Novation Launchkey, Mac Mini. It may surprise some, but since I've had them for almost a decade, I find myself doing most of my work on my AT Studio Headphones. I'm so used to how they sound, and at what point a song sounds good on them, that they are my primary listening device. Of course, I also use my monitors + Sub, my car speakers, and any other type of headphones I have for references.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I'm actually the most inspired by producers who managed to do all their own mixing and create a unique space & sound. Smaller artists like: Tennyson, Teen Daze, or Sam Gellaitry. Their mixes have true personality.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I specialize in mixing electronic music. I will also master electronic music, or do a combination. My most listened to and produced genre is electronic, so I believe I can do my best work here. However, I am open to any genre, if so requested.
