Interview with Jacob Washington-Lacey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was asked by another production company to mix a gospel EP. I was able to deliver the mixes, including revisions and final mix for mastering, in the matter of days. The producers, artist and the company were well pleased with my work ethic and timeliness to complete their project which was time sensitive.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer to be In The Box (ITB). If I decide to work outside of my home studio, I need to be sure everything I did there will work as expected in other studios or even when I'm mobile.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: "It can be fixed in the mixing stage" If you have the opportunity to execute correctly or give your best in the recording stage, DO IT. I can not make you sound "better" if your execution or performance in the studio isn't your best!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you looking to accomplish? Do you have a particular sound/audience you want to reach with your music?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear as to what you're looking for. If you're unsure, don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for clarity and how the process will look to get the job accomplished successfully.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: To be full time in music. Going 8yrs and only getting stronger.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Fun, Chill and Determined.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, Coco Jones, Alex Isley, and some many more.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never be afraid to try something new! Don't allow others to box you in as to how to do the job.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Gospel and R&B are the primary genres. Also work on Hip-Hop and Pop.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Fresh new ears and an authentic sound that cannot be duplicated.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Speak with the client to discuss the goal, style of music & desired sound to be accomplished.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Currently running a Mac Pro (trashcan) ProTools Ultimate, plenty of plugins from Waves, Plugin Alliance, UAD Native, Slate Digital, and many more. Interface is the ProTools Carbon Hybrid Interface. Using the Heritage Audio RAM System 2000 Monitoring System, Adam Audio studio monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Engineers: Jon Blass, Jon Yaz, Leslie Brathwaite, Jaycen Joshua, Josh Godwin
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm either the musician who tracks out Piano/Main Keyboard, Hammond Organ or Live Drumset or I'm their engineer recording and mixing their music. I often do both for clients when asked
