After moving to the PNW, Micah has become one of the top call drummers for many genres. Whether you hear him on quickly, quickly's debut singer-songwriter album or Anna Tivel's experimental tender folk records, you will recognize his jazz-adjacent sound on over 25 recorded projects.
Micah is a seasoned jazz drummer gone rogue. After finishing his music degree in 2016, he started branching out of the jazz idioms and found himself playing nearly every style of music under the moon. Since graduating school, he has traveled all over the world to share his artistic voice with artists such as quickly, quickly, George Colligan, Anna Tivel, Jarrod Lawson, and Sama Dams to name a few. Although his jazz roots are always present in his sound, Micah is a truly versatile drummer that has let his curiosity in a vast variety of genres guide his musical path.
Over the last year, Micah has been working out of a recording studio in downtown Portland, OR called Ext. 606. Ext. 606 has a multiple rooms to track in to capture a variety of sounds to serve the needs of each project. In addition to having a collection of vintage and modern boutique drums, Micah’s sharpened ear and gentle demeanor provide a supportive space to realize your artistic vision.

Micah is super talented and as always a pleasure to work with. He took my notes and produced drum tracks above what I could've described.

Micah was able to lay down the perfect groove in ways I couldn't have described and better than I could have hoped. Super professional and super talented. Looking forward to working with him again!
Micah Hummel is one of the most gifted technical and musical drummers I have had the opportunity to work with. His musical contribution to Montavilla Jazz’s Call + Response film project were delightful.
Micah is a percussive killer and a lovely tender soul. Hire him!
To say that Micah is a great drummer would be a vast understatement- there are few in the world with musical sensibilities like his, and none who can execute those sensibilities so effortlessly. To watch Micah play is, without a doubt, poetry in motion. His musical decision making and technical prowess are breathtaking. Micah has a great ear for his role in the music- a testament to his versatility. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of getting to watch him play on many occasions, and each time I’m left even more dumbfounded than the last. Inquire about his services- you will not regret it.
Ok so, Micah is one of those drummers who elevated everyone around him with sheer musicality and taste and sensitivity and good vibes. Highly highly HIGHLY recommend him to play on your music, he will do a really good job both performing and recording his drums for you.
Micah is incredible, he is such a talented, kind musican. Great communication and ideas, can’t recommend him enough!!
Micah has always understood what tasteful playing means in context of genre and style. Micah is a top notch drummer and musician.
Micah Hummel brings top notch musicianship and professionalism to everything he does. This year, I hired him to track drums for my record, both remote and in-studio, and have been thrilled with the sound quality and creative execution on both. The dynamic, textural, and sophisticated quality of his playing is perfect for any folk project and I am lucky that his unique creative voice will be part of mine. In addition to being the most talented drummer I know, he is also kind, thoughtful, humble, and an absolutely treasure to collaborate with.
Micah is one of the best and most musical drummers (or musicians in general) that I’ve ever encountered. Attention to detail, professionalism, and deep passion for music are just three of the many ways he brings light to music. I’ve worked with Micah on several different projects for over a decade and he consistently delivers amazing results over a wide range of styles. You’d be remiss to at minimum not have him play drums on your music. Also, his engineering skills have skyrocketed over the last few years to an attentive detail and creative extent.
As a fellow percussionist, I can speak to Micah’s fluency. He’s a top notch musician. Hire this man!
I’ve spent around 4 years playing, studying, and working with Micah. A complete musician in every way from listening to reading. Not to mention he has a deep knowledge about music as whole - not to generalize but Micah can play it all. He is an amazing hang, reliable, communicative and a sheer joy to play with. Would highly recommend Micah for any high level music function in any capacity from playing, writing, teaching, to consulting.
Micah is one of the most creative drummers I’ve worked with. He happens to also be one of the kindest humans I’ve had the pleasure of working with. A real gem in every sense of the word.
Musically speaking, he always serves the music but manages to NEVER sound ‘stock’. He’s got an incredible touch and endless ideas. I love this dude!I’ve worked with Micah consistently over the years in a variety of musical settings and have always found him to be immensely humble and an absolute monster on the drums. His blend of approachability and astounding technical skill is truly a rare combination. He shines in every genre and I cannot recommend him enough. He is an invaluable asset in any musical situation.
Micah is an amazing musician. His command of arrangement and improvisation are things you cannot learn. I have had the pleasure of working with him more than once and he brought a level of musicianship that is hard to come by.
Interview with Micah Hummel
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Often times people hear me on a specific gig and think that’s my bag. Although that’s flattering, I do pride myself in being a very versatile musician who can play a lot of different styles!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I grew up and went to school for jazz but in the more recent years I’ve been playing with a lot of singer songwriters and electronic musicians. That being said, I had a steady gig theater for 8 years that I learned A LOT from. My first teacher was a Cuban percussionist so I often find that showing up in my playing as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is serving the music. Although I do have a distinct voice on my instrument, my playing is highly influenced by the music and room I’m playing in. This often manifests in me playing in a hilariously wide range of groups and genres.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I just opened a studio in Portland, Oregon called Homeroom. We’ve got a treated room and a beautiful mic locker for tracking drums. The room was built in collaboration with respected acoustician Derek Trost. The space provides access to warm punchy drum sounds.
