Interview with Rosehill Production Services
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on E.P’s for each of my 2 brothers as a co-producer, mix and mastering engineer. It is fun to see our individual E.P’s on iTunes and the response we still get from friends, family and strangers who are hearing it for the first time!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently mixing over 3 albums worth of material for a long-term project, with the first release slated for autumn and a couple a month thereafter for the forseeable future.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Tim Gilchrist - Mastering Engineer
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I was brought up analog (OTARI MTR90, Studer 800, Amek Angela mixing desk etc etc). I have most of the equipment I used in pro studios during the 80’ & 90’s as UAD plugins and I have to say; they are exceptionally close to the real thing!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My clients know that I NEVER stop working on a song until I/ We KNOW it is ready!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creating a KILLER bassline, final production, mix or master for a client and knowing that they are completely and entirely satisfied and in love with the results.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q1. Is my song written and produced at a high enough standard to justify paying for further production, mixing and mastering? A1. YOU are the person that dictates if a song is at a “high level”. Many of our favourite songs/ productions may well not be “state of the art” sounding productions but have a level of originality, sincerity and integrity that will overcome percieved shortcomings.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That you can transform a poorly written and performed song into an opus!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What is the creative/ artistic objectives of the project? 2. What equipment was used in the production? 3. What is the timescale for the project? 4. What is the budget?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Communication is key! Be clear about what YOUR objectives are for YOUR song. This is why I always insist on a comprehensive briefing prior to undertaking a job. My advice is to ensure you have prepared questions and accurate examples of the type of artist, sound, production that most closely resembles your work (if possible!)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My basses, macbookpro, Sm58, acoustic guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a bass player in a family band with my 2 brothers and cousin in the early 80’s. I was also playing guitar whilst doing numerous bass sessions. The band dissolved when our keyboardist left to form Simply Red. I then played with guys I still refer to as my band! We all evolved into a session band as well as producers in our own right. We went on to tour and record with Rebel MC, 808 State, Vivienne McKone, Paul Young etc. I then taught Music Technology and Performance in college and university for over 20 years from the year 2000, whilst maintaining production work in my own studio as well as session work. I’m now no longer teaching, as I am focussed on my production work and relaunching my label.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: It is certainly obvious that my style is “old school” R&B / Funk/ Gospel, however I do have some imminent releases that are very much Trap/ Grime derived but with very melodic and orchestrated vocal arrangements!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Prince / Jam & Lewis They defined the sound of music performance & production in a period where modern popular music wtook advantage of modern technology but manipulated through high levels of musicianship.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: An inspired song performed with skill, sincerity and integrity with budget equipment, is much more powerful than a bells and whistles souless production, recorded with state of the art equipment.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Typically, the bulk of my current work involves music with obvious roots in modern Soul, Gospel and old-school Rnb, however I do have extensive experience as a freelance engineer working with Virgin signed indie artists (Paris Angels) as well as many many independent rock/ indie sessions.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill is being able to interpret and realise the aims and aspirations of the artist. I am adept at putting my own preferences to one side and seeking to achieve the objectives of the artist/ songwriter/ label.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Over 3 decades of experience playing and engineering with artists who together have sold millions of records. (Dabrat, Patra, Kid Creole, Rebel MC, Vivienne McKone etc)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will typically be sent stems/ mixes from an artist or label and after detailed consultation, undertake the task at hand following intense listening to the source files. Bass sessions tend to be turned around rapidly, especially studio sessions.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My system is based around Mac Pro Xeon with ProTools running with C24 and a vast selection of UAD plugins, as well as vintage outboard, samplers and keyboards. I play Ibanez BT6 and Tobias 5 string basses.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Prince (obviously), as his music knows no boundaries. Isley Brothers, for their songwriting, vocals, arrangements and musicianship in particular the material from the 70’s & 80’s. Slave, a little known 70’s/80’s band from Dayton, Ohio whose track “Just a Touch of Love” is one of my top 5 of all time with Purple Rain number 1!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work is based around facilitating semi-pro artists and labels who are looking to achieve professional sounding productions, mixes and masters. I also undertake bass guitar sessions both live and in the studio.
